Shady plants for May

New Providence, NJ(Zone 6a)

Galanthophile, the sweet shrub in the picture is Calycanthus ×raulstonii `Hartledge Wine'. It is very fast growing. I also have the Sinocalycanthus chinensis. This one hasn't flowered yet. It is supposed to be white flower and really pretty. I keep them in the east side. They get morning sun, afternoon shady.

I love your double bloodroot. I have three flowers yet, unlike your patches of them. Hopefully, they will spread fast.

Do you have double Anemonella thalictroides? They are on my top wanted list.

Thanks, I'll make a note of that one. What conditions does it prefer? I don't have any anemonella but really like them. I'm going to visit a nursery next week that specialises in shade loving plants. They won a gold medal at the Malvern flower show this week. I'll be expecting to bring a few things back! Ann

This is farfugium argentea. It's a beautiful foliage plant and has yellow flowers in the fall. I don't like them so I cut them off and let the leaves have their day.

Are those leaves normally variegated?

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, the argentea is the variegated form of the farfugium. There are several others. I grow the Cristata which is grey, fuzzy and very ruffled, the 'spotted leopard' (aureomaculata) version which is in the photo and the crested spotted leopard version. There are some very odd ones that look as if they have a virus but I don't do those.

About the Hartledge Wine, I second the "very fast growing" comment by fang. I guess you know, but give it room! Mine is in its third year. It throws up new branches to 10 feet; who knows how big the whole shrub would get if you left it alone. I cut it off a lot - doesn't phase it. The flowers are twice as large as the usual calycanthus. And leaves in proportion. It is on my top 10 in the garden list.

I went to Rutger Gardens in NJ. Here are some pictures I took in the shady garden.

Nice gardens! - it's always useful to see how plants behave when given this sort of scale! Great photos.

This is Clematis Dr. Ruppel. It only gets a very few hours of sun in the morning. Shade by 10:00 am. I have one other that will bloom in the shade, but it's not blooming right now. Etoile Rose. Also blooms in full sun.

Some clematis do much better in shade don't they. Nothing worse than bleached out flowers! This is macropetala Floralia.

That is really stunning. I love the variety in Clematis. The large-flowered type are nice but not the whole picture.

This is Clematis Rubens which was blooming at the beginning of the month, but just barely. Should bloom then for people in cooler regions. It's crawling across the beams of my patio on the south side of the house. It gets no direct sunlight though.
