HELP! Lilac propagation

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

My DH (maybe not so dear right now) is cutting down my lilac tree!!!! He says it is in his way when he mows, and I have a couple, but but this is the biggest one. Is there any way to take cuttings and grow them like that, or is everything he chops off just a lost cause??
Please someone help! I hear the chain saw!

Janis

Can't you tell him to wait for just a few more weeks? Goodness gracious! You need to get soft wood cuttings from that to try to root it. That means about 6" cuttings of new growth, Gosh Janis, I'm really sorry. See if you can convince him to just hold off until you can get some cuttings from it. It's not like this lilac just grew to its current size overnight and is physically reaching out and attacking him or something. If you can get a bunch of softwood cuttings, send some to me and I'll root them for you and send them back. Men!

Hey! I resemble that remark.

Maybe some sugar in the gas tank will borrow some time. Or loss of sugar may change his mind.

Take a plug out of the lawn mower-or some wire, that should give you a few wks!!! lol My lilac throws out a lot of babies by runners-maybe you have some too and can dig them up.

Take a close look at the base of the lilac. If there are any little new growths (not suckers - they look different) - take a spade and separate them from the trunk. Try to get all the root you can. Transplant by digging a hole, filling it with water, setting your "new" lilacs in and fill with dirt. Be sure to tamp the dirt down to get rid of air pockets. Unless the transplant starts looking really dry , don't water again. Lilacs don't like lots of water. And don't fertilize. They don't like or need much in the way of fertilizer. My lilacs thrive on layers of grass clippings and fall leaves.

The new babies will look so small to you, but they grow fast and may even bloom next spring.

Do you have a baseball bat? Apply it liberally to his head. Jerks like him give us men a bad reputation.

Or as a redneck friend used to tell me, there are few crises that cannot be solved with semi-automatic weapons or plastic explosives.

Who wears the pants in your family anyway? If the answer is "you" then assert yourself. And if the answer is "him" then pull them down to trip him.

Take a family vote, majority rules -- you, him, and the lilac all get to cast ballots.

Go into his sacred den and start throwing away things that get in your way when you vacuum or dust.

Or, design an attractive planting bed around the lilac so he doesn't have to mow so much.

Thanks guys! He cut down half of it. I'm not happy but it could be so much worse.

Messing with his lawn mower or chainsaw is paramount to messing with his car.... and the last person that messed with his car got a nasty smelling surprise enamating from the heater vents..... so I won't take that chance.

Lauren, if we are still here when we have thet much growth, I will send you cuttings to root for me, thanks so much for offering. We are looing for a place to move, and I hope to be able to take lilac look me. We have a few bushes, trees.... would it be possible to dig one up and take the whole thing?? If so, that is what I'll do.

Tigerlily and Country Mom, I will try both your ideas. Thanks so much for your help. CountryMom, I used to live in Waco (just south of Canton on 43?) I bet you aren't too far from me.

Guy, thanks for the laugh!! The trip him thing was hysterical!!

I love him all, I really do. My consolation is that the chainsaw threw the chain, and he cut himself putting it back on LOL (not bad... but still a bit of satisfaction).

Thanks and hugs to all
Janis and the remainder of the Lilac :)

Woofens - I must admit I had to look up both Waco and Dillonvale. I have never been that far south, although Waco doesn't look to be that far away from me - maybe 25- 30 miles .

It is nice to meet another person from Ohio. Good luck with your lilac !
