I'm wondering if Formosa Lilies can be container grown? I'm in zone 5,
Formosa Lilies in a container?
They get pretty tall, about 6 to 9 feet. Someone did say that they had L forosanum is a pot that they brought in every winter, but can't remember who. Maybe Inanda.
I hope they post their experiences. I brought in 19 brugmansia in 20 gallon muck buckets and over-wintered them in the basement. They all survived, so I "could" do it, or could put them in the garage, unheated but insulated. I do have a couple zine 6 plants that survive the winter, but they are close in, to the house, and I mulch them.
There is the short variety, L. formosanum var. pricei which grows about 12 inches tall. But maybe that is TOO short for your needs? I purchased one at a local specialty nursery a couple of years ago. It was kinda cute.
I have these already, in gallon pots, they're the tall ones. I've been dragging my feet about transplanting them, and I know it's going to have to happen soon. I did start some from seed this spring but they are pitiful. Very low percentage of germination, and the seedlings look like weak little blades of grass. Not sure if they will ever amount to anything.
My formosum seedlings must look just like yours!
I started them in Jan and have been hardening them off outside for about a month now, bringing them in for the occasional frost and moving them to more sun.
They are now in full sun and I hope they take a growth spurt when I plant them out in a week.
I have a friend that grows L. f. var pricei in troughs in zone 4.
First time for growing seedlings of these (pricei) too. Look just as described here. I winter sowed, so they have not been inside, yet they still seem wimpy for a lily that is suppose to grow very quickly.
I'm relieved that I am not the only one with puny seedlings. For a seedling that's supposed to get 6 feet tall, it's going to have to get in gear. I have been using Messenger and Mighty Plant, but so far, they haven't taken off.
