Aliums multibubosum with 'globemaster'

And white multibulbosum abloom today with the iris, a. 'globemaster' and my most exciting combination (for me!) Eremurus 'spring valley'. Can you tell I'm a neophyte gardener? Some of my neighbors might call it gaudy, but I think it's fun.

Wow, if your neighbors think that is gaudy, they would really be offended by my place!

LOL well I edited out all the mistakes!

Tabasco, your garden photo is idyllic, and with rocker on the porch your property is totally inviting and charming. How old is the house? I planted again after many years of failure to winter over eremurus, some more. It has always been a favorite of mine. I am trying a different part of the garden and have high hope. ( but then I am always hopeful, just not very realistic!) Patti

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

sorry, not my porch--it's the neighbors'! Their house was built in 1996 though. I wish I had a porch.

I will be interested to find out if I can winter over these eremurus. I planted them on little hills of gravelly soil to help drainage and I am going to be extra careful when watering this summer to avoid rotting them out. We'll see.

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

I have successfully over-wintered them for several years and i am a zone colder. I just ignore mine...

Good luck!

Please take a look at the Co-Op forum - for the Allium offer. The prices are right, & the varieties are wonderful. It is titled "Alliums for Fall"

jmorth-- your Allium schubertii are really interesting. I have read about them but never knew any one to grow them successfully.

Your allium with the lily is a lovely combination, too. I wish my lilies were out now. You really have an early bloomer there.

JRush-- Thanks for the info on the Allium co-op. I would like to get some more Globemasters if the price is right. I mean really 'right'! And 'multibulbosums'. They were a pleasant surprise.

here is my pitiful one. I've since discovered alliums are not a South Texas kinda plant.

wow They are really neat! maybe i'll try some on the next planting!

Where should I go to get them? I like seeds.. but I'm easy *grin*

Sometimes it seems the total inflorescence reaches beachball size.

I planted some alliums last fall almost as a joke in my tiny town garden. Since then, I've been bitten by the container bug and am doing 40 large pots for friends, family and myself. My garden is a production facility! The photo shows the alliums amidst the clutter of cuttings, seedlings, pots and soils. They do give me a smile, but they don't have pride of place in this shambles! Thought you might be amused, though. --Andy

andy, what is the weeping small tree? I would love to see your containers. Patti

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Patti, that's a weeping cutleaf caragana. I'll have to mount a good photo of it in PlantFiles, since I don't see it listed there. It's tough as nails but looks so delicate. Gives good height to the garden and a nice complement to my ferns. When the production phase is over I'll post some photos of the garden as it's meant to look. And some of the containers, when they've grown in a bit.

voss- your sad and lonely allium needs company. I don't understand quite why they wouldn't like Texas. It seems like good onion growing country, but maybe not...

Andycdn, your allium collection is just right for the corner of your courtyard. Did you buy a 'mix' --it seems like there is a variety of sizes and purples in there?

My allium 'hair' surprised me by blooming this week. I planted it two years ago and haven't noticed it until now. Can't seem to get it to show up in a pic, but it is kind of cute.

I will be off this week for California, so I will miss any new Allium blooms and good combinations posted but will expect some good pics when we get back!

Happy gardening! t.

The white version of A. 'giganteum'--can't think of the name...but very useful around the bearded iris....

just too hot, I think. I move a couple to a shadier location but I don't see any action going on. I think for that look I just need to stick to agapanthus, which is sort of a similar look, and grown widely in my area.

taramark, that is soooo cool! I've never seen it before. Where did you get it?

In case you haven't visited the coop forum, there's a B&B coop going on that has great deals on alliums and other goodies. Y'all ck it out

Hi Gemini Sage,

I bought the bulbs from Odyssey Bulbs.

Allium caureleum is the shorter in front.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks taramark. I've never heard of Odyssey Bulbs and will have to check them out. A. caureleum is the blue one previously called A.azureum is'nt it? If so, I have that one and love the shade of blue. I made a mistake by not underplanting them with something more 'fluffy', as the stems and leaves look a bit naked. I love those spheres arising from mounds of other plants.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5a)

Dear Allium Lovers,

My garden now has TWO big bald spots where the Alliums used to be... :-( I need to look for some PERENIAL plants that I can grow there to live happy while Allium leaves are all over them and look nice by itself after Alliums go to heaven.

Can you help please? Thank you.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I made the same booboo last fall without thinking. I planted some miniature roses in the spot to fix it.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Asunee, I'd suggest Astilbe. Very reliable and has good foliage all season.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

These are my allium moly, common, but a favorite of mine. I love using them in arrangements with Iris. I find them a cheerful complement in the garden for the Siberian Iris and lingering pansies. I do deadhead them to keep them in check. Patti

A big patch of allium is about to bloom. I am not sure which one it is ( I don't think it is glaucum as I have another which is much more curly). It has been in this spot since 1983 and has behaved well. Opens to a pale pinkish blossom. Any ID help? Patti

Tabasco,

The 'whtie flower' is Allium karatevense.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

About the bare spots left by giant allium-- I have placed large low pots of lantana which I overwintered in the garage to fill in. Also pelargonium. And I find viney hardy geranium (Orion, for instance) help cover some of the places. This residual issue is a bit of a challenge, but it's still well worth having the allium bloom I think.

I purchased several kinds of white Allium, taramark, and I suspect the ones pictured in my June 3 post are either 'White Giant' or possibly 'Mount Everest'. I do have Allium karativiense 'Ivory Queen' in the hosta garden though, too, and I hope they come back.

Out of all the whites, I think I like 'Nigrum' the best.
