Starting plants from seed is new to me and I started tomatoes, hot peppers, and snapdragons in soilless mix, and they have all sprouted. Yesterday, for the first time I misted them as they seemed quite dry in their black plastic trays. Today, they still seem dry and I wonder if I should sit them in a shallow pool of water? My worry is about overwatering. Do you have any tips for me?
I also started sunflower seeds in Jiffy pots and I can say that I won't do that again. They sprouted quickly but the medium dried out in a "jiffy" and I ended up pulling off the mesh and dropping them into containers of soilless mix where they now look much happier. I'd like to get this seed thing down as it is so economical and lets you grow anything.
How best to water my seedlings?
If the seedling are large I water with a fine mist or if they're tiny, I bottom water, which is sitting the container in a pot of water. I like doing the latter anyway because it provides more humidity for seedlings. The only problem is that it can't be so wet that they're constantly sitting in water.
Yeah... I don't like jiffy pots either. They always seem to strangle even the healthiest and more robust of the seedlings.
Tangerine, if you have seedlings, just water them well in the am and then water as needed. Keep the soil on the dryer side and you will get better roots and less chance of any fungus. I really keep my seedings on the dryer side. I only mist when the seeds are germinating, and I use a gentle low pressure on my hose end when I water seedlings. It takes forever to water the soil (which is what you are doing now that the seeds have popped and are growing) with a mister head. You want to wet the soil entirely and let it dry out so the roots are encouraged to go to the bottom of the container looking for water. If you mist the soil, chances are you will only end up with the top part of the soil wet.
