Katsura: Heronswood Globe vs. species

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I bought a Cercidiphyllum japonicum "Heronswood Globe" last year. It is still in its container. Last year I had my doubts that this really was a superior cultivar, but these doubts are now gone. Compare these pictures taken today of both HG and a seedling I grew.

Last month somebody showed comparison pix of Rochfux (sp?) vs. seedlings that showed a similar contrast. I would love to see comparison photos of Rochfux and Heronswood Globe.

This photo is "HG."

And this is the straight species.

I just got some seedlings going a couple of months ago. They are tiny yet.

Lovely coloration those HG leaves.

Not positive, Scott, but the clone is probably 'Rotfuchs'. You should probably go back and edit your post.

I kinda like the rebel nature of the name that Scott put on it--Roch on! I'll take a picture of my 'Rochfux!" later this AM, and one of my regular Katsura.

Here was my Rotfuchs pic.

...and "Rochfux"!

...and since no thread is complete without Carpinus, here is C. fargesii, which has the best foliage, but I am not entirely convinced of its hardiness. Many leafless twigs on this one, but still slowly leafing out.

My C.f. just survived its first winter here intact, if that encourages you any!

Guy:

The one in the picture was planted deep in a protected woods 3 years ago, and died to the ground over its first winter. It resprouted, and I grew it in a pot for 2 years, planting it out last fall. It is mostly intact, but not entirely. I am skeptical, but I will enjoy it while I can.
