Hi all,
I have some hibiscus seeds that sprouted and then... nothing. They seem to be stuck at the same size for weeks now. Out of the dozen or so, only 4 sprouted. Should I go ahead and repot them while they're still so small?
Thanks,
LoraB
Wintersown hibiscus seeds
I did a bunch of Hibiscus moscheutos last year. Sown in mid-March, started germinating in mid to late-April. IIRC, they kept germinating for 2 months, and I didn't pot them up until mid-June. They started growing when the weather really warmed up, which is their nature when mature, as well. They bloomed beautifully from single stalks, in their first summer.
I potted up 13 out of 40 seeds sown. 1 died during the summer, and I planted 12 in a holding bed in the fall. I have to move them soon.
Hi donn,
THanks for the reply. So you're suggesting I should just leave them in the milk jug and let them do their thing? What about fertilizer?
L.
Hi Lora,
It depends. I sow in individual paper plant bands, so transplanting is no problem for the roots. If you have a couple of seedlings growing closely together in a jug, if might be better to pot them up when they're young, to make it easier on their roots.
Ferts depends on what they're in now. If it's a potting mix with time release ferts, like MiracleGro, they likely don't need any more.
