It seems the natives always take their time emerging. Perhaps they know all too well our confounded continental climate. This shot was taken last week, so my yellowwood is a little further along now, but not much! The fringe tree has barely broken bud, while I noticed some horsechestnuts nearby that are already in fall color!

Ohhhhhh! Another Cladrastis!
Lauren,
Do you have a Cladrastis planted on your vast acreage? (I read on another thread everything you have ordered/yet to plant and, Holy buckets, you're sitting at the computer? Shouldn't you be out planting? (:o) Sorry, I just have to give you a hard time!!!
Mike
Yes, I have one Cladrastis that survived planted here. One! I am so excited. I don't even let the dogs sniff it. If it wasn't already dark, I'd go take a photo of my little baby. I also started some from seed and incredibly I have one seed that germinated already. I am thrilled. I think the problem was ordering them from Oregon but I was having difficulty finding them locally as a sapling and they don't transplant well in B&B... been there done that already a few times and I can honestly say that the smaller the better with this species. Why, I don't know but they do not like to be transplanted.
I knew I ordered a lot of plants and have been diligently keeping up with everything going in the ground as it comes in. I was doing a great job until I just got an order in today with over 200 plants and one order for terrestrial orchids that wasn't supposed to be here for another week or so. I also received confirmation that I would be getting in another order so I suppose that will come tomorrow with my luck. It will take me this entire weekend and the better half of this coming week to get the plants in the ground from what just came in today. To top things off, I had to stop what I was doing and dig a nice big 20 gallon hole for the terrestrial orchids. I hate digging in clay particularly when my favorite shovel is busted and my tire on my wheel barrel is flat and my husband is gone and I think he took the air pump with him to fill up bicycle tires for him and the kids while they're camping. I tried ramming that wheel barrel in my car to get it to the gas station to fill the tire and no go. I am about ready to stick it in my trunk and I don't care how much of it sticks out to be able to drive verrrrrrry slowly to the gas station to get air in that tire. That clay is heavy and it is a bummer without a wheel barrel and a garbage shovel.
FYI, I've been a good girl. I've been preparing beds and digging holes in anticipation of trees and shrubs coming. Right now, I'm sort of ahead of the game. Sort of.
Here's my orchid hole-
