Cardiocrinum

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

does anyone have any experience starting Cardiocrinum from seed? I just received it and would like to know a faster way of germinating them, hostajim1

I believe the seed need stratification - I used the Thompson & Morgan germination instructions.

growin, I wonder if using GA3 would shorten the stratification time? the reason for the haste is I bought a Cardiocrinum 3 years ago, and if it isn't sending up a flower stock this year. (they are monocarpic) I should have planted them in succession. I paid $10.00 from Forest Farm. (they Discontinued them) but alas I didn't. Heronswood has them for $30.00 1 gal pot. e-gads they can be pricey!!!! I can dig up the plant after it blooms and seperate the offshoots. so it'll be another 3 to 7 years before I have one bloom again. I'm going to try different ways, so I should get some going by seed. then by offshoots, I have a great spot for my Cardiocrinum garden. I'll post a pic. thanks Jim King

Hi Jim, I believe if you leave them the offshoots will be successive and may bloom earlier. I've seen them for sale here locally for much cheaper but not sure about Seattle. I'm tempted to try it in TC. What is GA3? If you mean Hydrogen peroxide, I haven't tried that method but want to from all the chat on it.

growin, GA3 is Gibberellic acid. JK

From what I remember, GA3 is quite expensive. There is a grower on Vancouver Island selling 15cm for $10. I'm gonna try and put in an order. I also have seed I need to germinate myself.

growin, check out super-grow.biz.com the price is more reasonable, Jim
