As if I don't have enough!

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Couldn't leave well enough alone, so I made another B&D order last week. It came today. No softball size, but very respectable. Got Pink Virtuoso, Harbor Star and Pookie; all orientals and L speciosum Uchida. They sent me Alma as a bonus bulb. I think it's a white oriental. Not sure if I've ever seen this one before. Also last week, Parks tempted me with some drawf orientals that I ordered. They also came today looking very nice; Little John and Strawberry Shortcake. This has got to be the end. I'm not ordering anymore bulbs until fall!

This is Little John.

I love Little John.

I like both of them. Very pretty!

Beautiful! Strawberry Shortcake looks like a starburst.

I purchased Strawberry Shortcake from Park's several years ago and I think it should have been named Strawberry Tallcake...

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Pard, is it over 2 feet? Do you have it planted in a shady area?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I had four of them in one of those half barrel planters. I guess they were about 2 feet the first year. You know how the growers always describe "Stargazer" as a short lily? Ha ha ha. I had them in a place that was full sun until 4:00 in the afternoon. I kept the Strawberry Tallcakes for 3 or 4 seasons then sold them off at a charity fundraiser for 10 bucks barrel and all.

So are you saying they should be planted at the back of the border? Yeah, my neighbor has an entire yard of Stargazers. I think they are all about 5 or 6 feet tall. I've never felt the need to go out and buy one with all that she has. Hum, I was going to plant those this weekend. Maybe I'll rethink the location.

Go ahead and plant them where you planned. You can always move them, right?

I have had my stargazer for about 6 years now....and it only gets about 2ft tall....the same height as my balloon flowers. This was last year....

I've had mine for 7 years and it is also staying short. Smells to high heaven tho!

My neighbor's yard is very shady, so I think that has something to do with the unusal height of her Stargazers.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmmm.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

You can get the"official" description of registered lilies at www.prideon.com. Looking up Star Gazer, it says it is 1.5 meter tall, about 5 ft. So it's not a short lily under normal garden conditions. I believe the reason it is thought to be a short lily is because growth retardants are used on them for potted and cut flower greenhouse culture.

Billyporter, maybe you have Strawberry Shortcake;-)

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I don't know. It was given to me and she said Stargazer. It's beautiful and smells good, so I'm happy. It is in a bed that gets afternoon shade. I lost 2 bulbs. I also found out they like acidy soil and mine isn't.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I didn't know that. All the catalogs indicate the height for Stargazer as 3'. I always thought my neighbor's were so tall because they didn't get enough sun. I know the ones I have in areas that don't get full sun seem to be taller.

Billy, this fall, dig up your bulbs and mix in peat moss and then replant. Your lilies will do much better.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes. I got peat last year to do just that and forgot I had it. I planted 5 new lilies. I was so disgusted with myself! Better yet, I need to make a new lily bed with amended soil!
