Wild MG's?

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

When we moved in to the house, I noticed that there were a bunch of dead vines ont he chain link fence. They looked like old mrning glory vines due to the seed pods that wee still on the vines. Well, I've had several of them come up in the yard and I've been digging them up and potting them till they get big enough to plant on the fence. I have no idea what kind they are...there is one variety that grows wild here that is purple with a blue throat and seems to bloom all day long. I hope that is the variety I have...(I hope, I hope, I hope!) here they are in the pots....

Hi BamaBelle,

Nice to see you on the MG forum...

The plants you have are some type of Ipomoea most likely Ipomoea cordatotriloba or Ipomoea hederacea...

I'd like to see the purple ones with the blue throat...sounds like it could be Ipomoea indica...do they look like any of the ones pictured here

I went back and looked at the pictures I took of my dad's childhood home where the mornign golries were taking over the barn. I had it backwards, they are more of a bluish color with a pruplish throat. Funny how memory plays tricks on you, isn't it? Here is a closeup

Here is a pic of the vine. Keep in mind these picutres were taken at about 3 or 4 pm and the flowers were in full bloom! They seem to be a wild varient that is native to the area, so I'm hopping that mine will be of the same varient.

BamaBelle - The flower you posted here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2228910

and the picture of the entire vine here

these photos are certainly showing Ipomoea indica...the leaves showing in your photos are mostly heart shaped with some leaves showing trilobing, and usually the Ipomoea indica has trilobed leaves with a few heart shaped leaves...so you have an interesting variation showing in the photos...

The Ipomoea indica is often found to be reproducing solely vegetatively from roots spreading and from above ground vines taking root where they make contact with moist earth, but some plants may produce seeds...I'd be very interested to obtain some seeds from any Ipomoea indica that you have growing 'wild' in your area...

The young seedlings in your yard might be Ipomoea indica, and that would mean that they should also produce seeds, since your young plants are obviously from seeds...the cotyledons are visible on your young plants...

Thanks for sharing(!)...

BammaBelle - I looked at the seeds that you sent and they are Ipomoea cordatotriloba...but there's plenty of Ipomoea indica around,so it should be easy to locate some...

Ron thanks so much for looking at the seeds and letting me know what I had. I have several pots of the seedlings that I have rescued form the yard. I wouldn't let my hubby mow or put down weed killer (darned dandelions are happy!) while I rescued wayward MGs and potted them up...just in case they were something rare.

I really appreciate your work, your expertise and your kindness.

Thank you,
Marcie
