It's tough to suggest where to begin just by seeing a couple of photos, but you obviously have a blank slate! This is a good thing. Your first step should be thorough soil preparation, since this is the only shot you'll ever have at that. Don't just start plugging in plants, no matter how tempting that is. Deep-till, add any needed amendments or pH adjustment, fix the grade if needed for drainage away from the house, establish any desired raised areas, etc. -- spend the whole summer doing that while you're researching what to plant, then begin planting this fall when the weather cools down and everything goes on sale. Toss out a few colorful annuals to get yourself through the summer.

Step number two probably should be to visit your favorite landscape nursery and have their designer give you a sketch with some ideas. You can save them time (and thus save yourself money) by giving them a scale-accurate base map to work from, plus your photos and any info on locations of utility lines, etc.

Step number three is to pay them for the design and then ignore most of it. You just want to have some ideas, not serve as a market outlet for all of their slow-moving plants. But do accept the parts of the design you like.

Step four might be to drive around your town and see what you like and what seems to grow well there. Also note what seems to be overplanted and avoid those. And think about seasonal variation, pest resistance, site requirements, etc. too.

Then come to us with some ideas we can react to.

Thanks Guy, some great idea. I have already been scoping out he neighborhood for ideas. I hadn't thought about soil prep, My husband is going to start tillering it up and moving some dirt when the weather clears up.

I have visited several nurseries as to what I like and don't. I will make a layout of the dimensions with photos and see what they suggest. Thanks for your suggestions again.
