alternate vs opposite question

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

If a tree has alternate foliage, with the veining on the leaves also be alternate?

No.

Just take a gander at Equil's favorite- buckthorn. ;-)

How many samples would you like sent to you of Rhamnus? Lemme see here, I've got mostly alnus and cathartica but I could toss in some others for comparative value.

Hmmm. Buckthorn . . . ob-opposite buds. But still has nothing to do with leaf veination patterns. After all, what kind of bud pattern would a tree with palmate leaves have? Opposite, like a Japanese maple? or Alternate, like a Kalopanax?

The veination on Rhamnus leaves are opposite, the leaves themselves are alternate.

Seems I'm always the stickler here. Pointing out that species Microbiota doesn't grow 4 ft high, and now, well PrairieGirl, your buckthorn must be different than those that grow here. Dirr calls the bud pattern subopposite.

Ricky - I thought the question was about leaf veination, not bud pattern. I have Dirr's 5th edition of the Manual, look at pages 840-841. Guess this is why we should stick to the Latin!

For Equil - "Landscape value: Species is basically worthless.."

Microbiota are Russian cypress, right? (page 665) So..??

Ow, my head.

THE BLONDE

Does any one want samples? You know... all the better to study them and all.

Samples going once.
Samples going twice.
Gone!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Buckthors vary in leaf arrangement - e.g. Rhamnus cathartica is opposite, while Rhamnus frangula is alternate. The species with alternate leaves are sometimes split off into a separate genus Frangula (in which event, R. frangula becomes F. alnus)

I thought the question was: bud pattern vs. leaf veination. Seems we both could be right, PrairieGirl! Up here, it is R. cathartica that is the pesky one.

Microbiota is Russian cypress, you're right. What I alluded to was in another thread, and not important.
