I know a couple of people said their Dames Rocket hasn't sprouted, but does anyone have any pics of what they look like when they come back in the spring? Mine haven't sprouted yet either. I believe they're a perennial, but I'm not even sure of that. I planted some last year and I've got a bunch of what is either weeds or Dames Rocket coming up where I planted them. They're so neatly placed, I'm thinking they're not weeds. Then again....could be Sweet William (I planted them there, too)......I've really got to do a better job of marking my plants.......I always think I'll remember in the Spring.....
dames rocket pics?
I can take pictures of my Dianthus for you, but I don't believe that I sowed any Dames Rocket. Did you already check the seedling gallery at www.wintersown.org ?
After I posted, I remembered about that. It's kind of hard to tell since these are bigger than the sprouts in the pictures, but I think it is the dianthus. It's is a flat rosette of leaves.....very thick, I guess you could say. About a foot away are things that look almost like the dianthus, but not as flat. Those are probably the dames rocket. Funny thing, though.....last year, I dug these things up as weeds. I seem to have every kind of weed known to nature, but I couldn't figure out how I came up with a new one. I should have realized. This year, priority one...mark everthing!
:LOL Well, if you didn't yank it all out, I think Dame's Rocket/hesperis matronalis is a biennial. (like digitalis).
Thanks for pointing out that seedling picture library on Wintersown.org. I had forgotten about that, and now that I have lost the labels on some of my containers, I need it!
The seedling gallery comes in handy, especially when you are trying to differeniate between sprouts and weeds!
LOL I should have reviewed the seedling gallery before I did my weeding last week!
Ouch! You think you "weeded" out some of your sprouts???
Thank heavens...I thought I was the only one. I do that every Spring. I can't tell what's coming up because of "issues" with labelling. Last year, I did leave all of my markers by my plants, but a lot of them disappeared over the winter or got raked up by my BF. I appreciate that he helped, but I didn't realize what had happened til afterwards. So....I'm winging it until things get bigger.
This year, I bought a whole bunch of wooden shiskebob sticks......every time I plant a hunk of perennials, it gets a stick. Hopefully this will stop me from weeding them next spring.
The wooden shiskebob sticks are a good idea for the short term or until you plants get a bit bigger.
Yeah, but by the time they're bigger, I'll recognize them. :) It's that first year when they're so small.....they die back and I won't see them until they start to come up in the spring. that's the "dangerous" time.
Yes, merryma, I know what you mean.
I an a newish gardener and I like to pick up on sale the odd (usually tiny and sorrowful) perennials here and there and stick them in the garden in Autumn to give them a try, or sow a packet of seeds in the garden, then forget, and the next spring they start to come back and I weed them out. So stupid. I don't have all of my gardening skills (like plant IDing) 'down pat', yet! The skewers sound like a good idea.
And that's why I like wintersowing. You know at least what you have in the container is something that is supposed to be there! (Even if you lost the labels like I did!)
Lost your labels? Ooh, that's not fun. I only did that once when I first started. Wrote the names on the bottle tops and then tossed them while I was hardening them off.....duh! Now they go on a mini-blind written with a #2 pencil. Never fades. But this year, I think a few of my seeds escaped into foreign containers. I've got a few sprouts scattered in different containers that look suspiciously like lettuce. There's no way verbena grows that quickly!
Btw, I think my mystery plants are actually daisies. I've got them all over the place in the spring. They're getting bigger and I'm seein the fuzzy oblong leaves. But they don't usually have that flat rosette; they're normally more upright. Odd, too.....I didn't think I had any in that area. I'm going to have to dig them up and relocate them or they'll be hanging out in my pathway.
