Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

What is going on with my babies??? They are starting out great, then they're getting all icky. Too much water? Not enough sun/started too early?

Sure would appreciate some help here...

are those ones dying just the first leaves, not the true leaves? if so those usually die and drop off, they seem healthy other than that first set of leaves there.

Those are the first leaves, however...

Sequee - I'm wondering if you have hot air or baseboard heat...as these can easily dry out the leaves of young plants very quickly, since the dehydration takes place faster than the relatively small root system can replenish...the leaves don't look 'diseased' to me,just dehydrated...the dehydration can occur from hot daytime conditions and/or from the house heat if the temperatures drop at night and the heat kicks on...try keeping the container(s) in water that is maintained at about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the container to maintain adequate moisture levels and remove the plants from any direct hot air from any heating systems...the leaves look nicely green and the plants don't look too leggy,so it doesn't appear like there is a light deficiency...
Try making sure they are not getting dehydrated from hot daytime temperatures or any drying house heat currents and see if that helps...

Well, doctor Ron - you've done it again! Hit that old nail right on the head!!! I turned the heat up in the sunroom a few days ago when the temps dropped and those 2 plants are (were!) directly above the baseboard heater!

I thnak you and my babies thank you!

BTW, how can you be a 5b in NJ?

Hi Sequee,

Glad you were able to locate the hot air source drying out the leaves on your young plants...

The climate zone I'm in is a borderline 6a/5b as the NW corner of NJ is the highest in elevation and we frequently get cold fronts in from the neighboring Poconos in PA and from NY...some of the more detailed climate maps will actually show that the NW corner of NJ has patches of areas that are in a 5b,but most maps just skip these details...I've noticed many local temperature variations even from one side of town to the other that seem to correspond to elevations or low points (like near the water) that can exhibit at least several degrees of difference...

Enjoy your MG's...
