I finally decided it was time to separate the moma from the babies today and I hope that I did it right. I read what it says on Rachel's page and tried to follow that the best I could. But I do have a couple of questions. Once all the little plantlets are separated, the moma is left with some roots herself. Can she just be put in a pot to grow to become a plant herself? She has roots on her so that is why I am wondering. I got 5 plantlets from one Lyra, 5 from the other Lyra, and 4 from Rhapsodie Carman. The only thing I had to put them in was 2½" pots. So I put wicks in each pot and planted the little plants or do you call baby plants plantlets? Anyway, I did it this way so that when I send them out to everyone they will already be ready to live in their new home, with wick and all. I got this idea from Allison. That is the way she sent mine and I thought it was so nice that I thought I would do mine like that too. So after they were all separated and re-potted, I gave them all a little bit of Optimara plant food to get them off to a good start. Does this sound okay? I took some photos along the way and I sure hope that I did this right. If I didn't, please let me know. I had rather someone tell me now than for me to continue to do it wrong. The first photo is of the babies that I got off of my first Lyra leaf.
Finally separated moma from babies
I do want to give the credit to Lorry who so unselfishly sent me these leaves. If I'm a moma, does that make Lorry the grandmoma? Thanks Lorry for helping me get started with my very first leaves.
Now, did anyone see where I might have done anything wrong? Please tell me if you did.
Jesse
Woohooo...congrats Jesse :) and they look terrific!
They do look good. : ) Way to go!
Thanks guys. Lorry, those came from you. So be proud that you had a hand in it too.
Thanks,
Jesse
Looks good to me! I just did the same! Great job!
Me too. Oh Laurie I have endless babies so many to pot up. lol Wait until you have hundred's of babies and then they just keep coming everyday . I am begining to think I will never see an extra shelf for my larger plants . And I keep putting leaves down. lol
About the question that I asked, if the moma is left with a root system of her own, can I pot her up to become a plant on her own?
Jesse
She won't become a plant but may give you more babies.
Okay Allison. She is still in pretty good shape so I put her back in the soil and maybe she will make some more.
Jesse
WTG, Jesse.
I can only hope I will be as successful as you were.

Hi Jesse!
They look so nice and healthy! Way to go!!! I have got more than one batch of babies from a momma leaf.
Like Allison said it won't become another plant just produce more babies!
Thanks for taking the time to share them with us.
Good job!
Joanne
I am impressed Jesse. Thanks for posting. I was wondering how big they needed to be before you separate them. I will have to wait for a while. Linda
Linda my two cents and everyone is different but I have always let my babies get larger except if Mom die . Waiting until their larger I feel gives them a better start, you lose less and they grow faster. Everyone is different you'll have to play around and see but thousands of babies just in the past year and half I have learned this is best for my little ones :))
wow jesse! nice growing! your are a good a.v. mom!
kelly : )
Way to go Jesse!! They look terrific.

Thanks for all the compliments. I did like Allison and waited until mine got larger before I separated them but I still had a couple of tiny ones in the bunch and since I never like to throw anything away, I put them in a pot too. They will probably take longer to get bigger but I hated not to at least give them a try. The bigger ones looked really healthy and I'm hoping they do well. I'm giving them a little Optimara plant food along and hoping that will help keep them healthy and growing well.
Jesse
