I'm old enough to remember the line, but we never actually owned a breadbox. I did see one once in the thrift store I used to manage, though. LOL

Garden Visit
I think it was Dorothy Killgalen (whom you probably are too young not to know) who used to pose it as a question on "Twenty Questions".
The trays I found at Dollar Tree were the drip pan bottoms to huge planters I would suppose. But for $1 I couldn't pass them up. They make great watering trays for seedlings and hold a lot when weeding, etc. I had bought three and then went back and got three more. When not in use they stack too.
Mitch, did you find some at your store??
Nope but they said they gets them in from time to time so to keep checking.
I will keep an eye out at my store for you too.
Thanks - I just love going there, I keep my classroom stocked in things from there.
I remember that line! And Dorothy Killgalen, (but I was just a wee lass when I saw her on TV, lol.) My 24 yr old son and I still play our version of 20 questions whenever we're on long trips, and the "Is it bigger than a breadbox" is always the first question we ask.
Long before my time - but we still ask that same question to start our 20 questions...
I was just a kid, too, when I'd watch it. The only show I was good at was "Name that Tune" and that's only because I was the youngest (by far) and heard all the songs from my brother and two sisters.
We like to watch the old gaem shows on the game show network - never can get the answers right but we love to watch them. There are so many good old black and white shows on TV who needs the mesed up new ones..
It was black and white until I bought a color TV set in 1963. My two nephews were 7 and 8 years old and still remember looking at the peacock on NBC. They could never understand the peacock in black and white. Now the 7 year old will be 50 in three weeks! I'll have to find a peacock card to send him.
lol - believe it or not we had my dads high school set in black and white until 1990 - yes in 1990 we moved into the color era.
In the mid-1950's my family lived in Midland, Texas, and my parents bought a TV because Midland was going to get a television station. We would turn on the TV and watch the snow. When it went on the air, the station broadcast the test pattern for days before any programing. We loved to turn it on and just look at the test pattern. LOL It doesn't take much to please kids!
I know the feeling, never had cable until I was on my own. In storms we would watch the snow and look for anything we could see.
Pirl, check your D-Mail.
OH My Mitch, your place sure dont look the same, as it did when I was there. You did a lot! I love the dividers you got there. Do you know what you are going to plant in each one? ...and I love what you got going behind you and Josephine. btw you can send your bunny over here, I have all the Trumpet vine he can eat. I am in the process of making an Arbor with it, hopefully it will cover my Hostas, so they will have plenty of shade.
Sheila - I loved it.
I'm sure Sheila would send the email to anyone who has celebrated a "speed limit" birthday: highway speed limits only!
I can send it if Sheila is out gardening.
It is growing - and it got a lot bigger... you know my plans are no grass in 3 more years!! So I am really working on it...
Mitch mine is if there is room the size of a postage stamp, I will plant something there. Just saying it a different way. Grass doesn't bother me. It is all the beautiful plants I want so grass has to go. LOL. DH doesn't mind at all. He says more plants less grass (Less to mow) :o)
Not that I like my picture taken, but it is on the RU picture thread. I am the one with the gorgeous guy next to me. We had a great time. Wish you could have been there. I guess there is one in Oct. Maybe we can all be there then. I look forward to meeting your DW.
Josphine is as great as you said. I gave her a big hug and one for you and DW.
Blessings,
Sandy
She is the best and greatest person I have meet on here. I saw the photos over there - have yours among others saved on my hard drive now!
I hate grass, I hate to mow... and I hate weeds! So I have some to the agreement with some plants that they are not weeds just wildflowers I did not want!
If you read anything by Malcolm Beck or Howard Garrett, you'll hear alot about how bad monocultures are and that's what grass is. Of course I'm speaking of St. Augustine and Burmuda grass. And besides that it doesn't feed birds, butterflies or bees as far as I know. So what good is it? I guess it's good for the lawnmower industry.:) The less grass we have the better off we'll all be.
Really? Do they have a web site or book or. . . would love to have something to back up what I am doing! The HOA is always trying to get me to leave my ft grass alone... I just keep cutitng a little bit down every few weeks so it gets a little smaller... some back up would help!
Mitch, If you type Malcolm Beck in the address bar, you get his website. He's a fascinating guy and very humble, easy to talk to, and curious about everything.
Howard Garrett has a newsletter called the Dirt Doctor (I think). I used to get it and now I don't. I don't know why. He lives in Arlington I think and does a radio show on some Dallas station. I don't know which one. He similar to Malcolm, but I'd say he's more extreme on some subjects. Try typing Dirt Doctor in the address bar.
Thank you sooo much - going to look it up and see what they can tell me!
Mitch. You better have Norton or some antivirus because my picture may keep alot of things away including some friends, it does not guarantee you will not get a virus. LOL
So far no one says anything here. My neighbors must love trees and flowers. We don't have a HOA that does anything. I am happy about that. They can be a huge pain.
Sure hope we all can be there next time. I think Dave is shooting for October. That would be great.
Blessings,
Sandy
I really plan on Oct - going to be fun.
Our HOA is dying.. just waiting for the day! They will not know what hit them... for now the only rules are for the ft yard so most everything is in the back!
Mitch
Whats HOA?
Home Owners Association
Took me a few to realize that one too. LOL!
Patrob, I am just now reading this thread. I was reared in Midland, Texas in the 1950s. And, I definitely remember the first television station and the test pattern. Wasn't it thrilling! LOL.
Posie4U, what elementary and junior high did you attend? I went to Travis and Cowden, but we were in Alpine my 8th grade year (my mother was finishing her degree at Sul Ross) and then moved to Lubbock in the middle of my 9th grade year. Robert said he got to visit with you at the RU, but I didn't. Next time!
Patricia
Hi All, just came in from planting my Texas Natives, the only thing left for me to plant is the 4'Oclocks, Texas Buckeye and Elephant Ears. I cant remember if Ceejay told me the Taros are shade or sun. Speaking of Shade ... I always wanted more Shade, so I could grow more Hostas ... just potted 23 of them too ... but since all this new development is going on around here and the buildings are going up five and six stories, I think I am going end up with more shade than I bargain for. "be careful of what you pray for!" Now that I am falling in love with the natives, they grow so wonderfully back there, where nothing has grown before, I dont think I am going to have enough sun. All the wonderful plants that Josephine has given me is growing like crazy and I am worried they might not bloom. Especially the Yellow, I got to think of something quick! I got that front area out there, I am going to get the yard man to dig up the Mondo Grass and the wild vines move the Cactus and work that soil. Would the Fall season be a good time to do this if I dont get enough sun this summer?
btw Patrob I got some info for you I will Dmail you in a few.
Sylvia
Sure Sylvia, the fall will the best time actually, and don't worry, I bet they will bloom for you this year where you have them now.
Josephine.
I sure hope so Josephine, especially the yellow ... why cant I remember the name? :) I planted the Penstemon and the sage and a big pot of some kind of Red Salvia. I am going to plant those four oclock between everything to keep the Japaneese Beatles away ... if thats what eating my Lambs Ears! I dont think my Lamb's ears are going to make it anyway... not enough sun ... oh well its not June or July yet. lol
Sylvia, are you keeping all your Hostas in pots?
You bet! Until I can find something that will eradicate these slugs without killing my cats. I had Bright LIghts sitting on the ground like an idiot! I saw one hole, then today it look like something took a saw to it! Do those things have teeth? How can something that mushy chew like that?
Sylvia
Sylvia,ROFLOL You are so funny! I don't know how they eat exactly, I guess they dissolve the leaves with some chemical they make. I know they don't have teeth.lol
Laughing away here too! Boy, we are a late night bunch tonight aren't we?
Do slugs have mouths even? Sylvia I have never seen one here... back in the day we had salt fights with them - sure made us kids happy.
Ohhh come on, what make that serrated effect? I dont think thats a chemical. lol These guys dont make holes, they go around the edges like a serrated pair scissors. I hate them!
