white flowering dogwood problem

Saint Simons Island, GA

i live in southern coastal georgia. i was given a small dogwood that is thriving and my neighbor has a huge one in good health so i bought a small white flowering dogwood (cornus florida 'abla') and planted it in the understory dappled shade of a large pig iron hickory which seemed a good spot where the air could move around it. it bloomed a month after i put it in the ground but there only three flowers and then it began to bud, although sparsely. everything seemed to be ok, if slow, when the squirrels started chewing off patches of bark. i used a cayenne pepper paste and that seemed to stop that but since then the leaves that have emerged are turning black at the edges and then the whole leaf just droops and gets all wrinkled and dies. could this be related to the cayenne treatment? the squirrel damage? or does the tree have a fungus of some sort. . i have taken off the leaves affected and am watching the others it but it seems to be spreading. any ideas about what is the matter, or what i can do about it? thank you, dooley worth

Dooley, if there are no scale insects or aphids to be found, it sounds like it has a compromised root system. Was it B&B or in a container? Perhaps the roots were frozen or dried out sometime before you got it. Maybe you planted it too deep, or forgot to water it, or kept it too soggy. Any of that sound possible?

guy: thanks, it was bareroot. so the roots may have been compromised it has no scale or aphids and it is not planted too deep and i have not forgotten to water it, in fact i have cut back abit on the watering to check if that is involved. dooley

starhillforest: guy, i finally had to pull the dogwood as it was obviously dead and there was a huge bark wound right above the root ball. don't know if that was there when i bought it or the animals got it after i planted it but you were right about damage close to the roots. thanks, dooley

Too bad -- but at least it's no longer a mystery.

Try again!
