Help me find a Japanese red maple, please

Metuchen, NJ

Is there a Japanese red maple that can grow red leaves in full shade?

Or maybe you know of some other ornamental tree with non-green leaves?

Thanks. I've been coming up blank on this one.

Did you want an upright or a cascading? I have heard that Red Dragon holds its color decent in shade, how much shade I am not sure. It is a casacding form. I am not sure for uprights.

Form doesn't matter as much as color.

Thanks, Willis, I'll look up the Red Dragon.

Anybody else have any ideas?

sorry, not JMs.

Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is the most common red-leaved full sized non-laceleaf form I see around the midwest, and quite cold hardy. I have never seen one "green up" around here; you should be able to canvass that issue pretty easily from a northeastern perspective. I can't offer much more on the Japanese maple clones; don't use them much in my current line of work.

Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' might be another candidate for the reddish range, but doesn't hold the intense color all through the season. Cercis canadensis 'Silver Cloud' does hold its variegation quite well in shade, showing the creamy white/silver foliage better there. And it's a local boy from KY.

Joulz,

I'm at the flower show all this week, and the Eastwood Japanese Maple people are in a booth right across from me. I'll ask them your question.

Thanks, Scott, and everybody, for your help!

Joulz,

The very nice woman from Eastwoods Nurseries recommended "Fireglow" and "Moonfire," as the two best for retaining color in shade, although she did say that sun is needed to maintain red color in all maples.
