Seed Trays, etc.

Arcadia, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi, all. I am new here at DG and have been going through the forums and asking questions where appropriate. I wasn't quite sure where to pose this one, so I am starting here. We have just started a small nursery and I have just built a small hh that I have some started plants in. We have several plants that we want to start cuttings from. Does anyone know of a good place where I can order seed/starter trays in bulk? Googling this brings up way too many sites and I would prefer to have input on places that people have ordered/purchased from. Thanks in advance! Vicki

Hi Vicki,Welcome to dave`s
I know this sounds strange but try your local supercenter
ours saves the pots and trays after they have thrown away the dead plants and for a donation to C.M.N they are all yours also ask about buying the busted potting soil most will sell it half price.
Good luck with the Nursery I`ll keep my eyes open for it when I visit family in June.I`m from just down the road (Nocatee)

Hi, Pheadra! Thanks for the welcome! Your family is pretty close - we are actaully in Fort Winder (on Kings Highway) - I would love for you to visit when you are here! Now I have to ask, and you can d-mail me if you want, what type of supercenter you are speaking of, the home improvement type supercenters or the multipurpose type supercenters? I work in Port Charlotte and should probably check with both of them. We ordered 14 yards of soil that we had prepared for the ornamental grasses we have started with so I think we are set on soil for a while, but it might be worth a shot to check on busted bags of seed starter mix - thanks for that suggestion, I wouldn't have thought of it! At some point we will have to check into fertilzer and a pre-emergent in large quantity, but for the time being we are just using Preen to see how that works. I am looking for the trays because we did some sea grape cuttings and a few of them have actually taken; we would like to do a bunch more of those, plus cuttings from other plants we have already. We ordered shade cloth from a company my hubby found online, and it seemed a bit pricy to me, but we needed to get it ordered and up so he didn't spend much time researching places and although I had been using DG for research, I hadn't yet become a member. Wish I had, this site has just a wealth of information and I am so enjoying my membership! Keep in touch and let us know when you will be in the area! Vicki

Hi again, Start with Wal-mart move on to Lowes and Home Depot
I know most will sell busted bags of anything at half price,I pick up alot here that way.As for the trays and pots most will save them for you I have gotten a large variety of sizes and trays to match
just for the asking because it takes up less space in the dumpsters,As for DG there is so much you can learn from others who have already been where you are and theres never a dumb question. And the Garden Watchdog is a great tool for narrowing down your searches and the Plantfiles have saved me more than once.Good luck! I`ll look for you when we`re down in the area

I should have asked before but what are you planning to carry

It certainly makes sense to get your supplies where they otherwise would be thrown out, but be sure to do what's necessary (washing/bleach) to thoroughly clean them.

One other possible supply source, though, that you may want to check out is your local agricultural supply center. I haven't been able to find anyone, online or storefront that beats our local one's prices. Ours is hardly local for you, but check out their website and see if you can find a similar type in your area. They might even be able to refer you to a Florida one.

You don't have to pay cash for stuff being thrown out, but you still have to invest your time to hunt around for it and then wash it out. That's fine if you're doing it for a hobby, but not for a business. Your time is worth a lot of money then. Here's a place online I have been getting celltrays and such from. Pretty good prices, I think, although the shipping is not cheap:

They deliver quick.
