Anna
Oh my god they are cute! I am not a fan of oppossums but I would have to say the babies are cute! I bet they kept you busy!

Lilburn, GA

I released 4 this evening. They are lovely when young but at the release stage, they bite and scratch. :o(

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Yikes! Bet with those new habits you are happy to send them on their way! How old are they when you release them?

Lilburn, GA

about 4 to 5 months old. Yes, I am happy to see them go. Also, they smell so bad once they start eating adult foods, ie, cat and dog food.

But I worry and hope they are OK and live happy.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

YIKES! 4-5 mos wow that's a long time, I guess you would worry ...they would probably not smell so bad if you turned them into vegetarians! LOL.

Lilburn, GA

LOL!!!

Opossums are very tricky to bring up. they can suffer from metabolic bone disease and die if theyir diet is notplanned really well. They need the right amount of calcium and protein. Any mistakes and they get very ill.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Well you are a wonder- good work Anna!

Lilburn, GA

thank you April!

(Zone 7b)

For the animals, you are a human angel!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Anna when the Opossums are set out on their own how then do they get their special diet ?

Lilburn, GA

hi Allison,

They know how to eat the right things. They will eat wrongly in captivity. In the wild they will eat the right amount of eggs, and bones and meat.
It is all instinct.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Ok where do they find all this food ?

Lilburn, GA

they eat eggs from nests, baby birds, lots of dead animals, they go through trash bins, food people put out for dogs or cats, fruits. They can survive really well, if released in a good area.
