Lemon Grass Questions

Ashland, OH(Zone 6a)

I recently read somewhere that somebody was growing lemon grass and making their own tea out of it. They said it tasted pretty good. Anyway, I looked it up, and it says it'll grow in my zone 3. So...I want some!!! (yet another thing recently added to my 'want' list!) *lol*
My question is: Do I look for seeds? Or do you have to get this in root divisions or what? I know nothing about this plant at all. I'm in the process of looking up info on it but not much luck so far. That's why I'm trying here. Thanks!

hi there Aunty

here in the UK Lemon grass is being pushed as an unusual pot plant which can also be used in the kitchen. I'll find a photo and scan it for you to see

I have heard that Lemon grass has seed but my plants have never bloomed.I dig them each fall and divide and winter in the greenhouse.Over the summer each small clump(fist sized)
will grow to 3 feet tall and can be devided into a dozen or so plants.Does make tea but too "lemony" for me.I use it in a mixed tea.

Thanks, Mark!

gone2seed: Do you have any extra of the lemon grass you'd be willing to send my way?

Hi Aunty,
I have some Lemon grass seeds. I've put some into your plant light plans and will send them with the plans.

Now maybe you can tell me...will it flower? gone2seed says theirs have never bloomed, but I assume if you have seed, you musta got em somewhere on the plant! *lol* Maybe you can tell me so I'll know? Thanks again!

I started lemon grass seeds last yr inside. i bought my seeds from?Territorial i think..anyway they came up(i had no idea what they would look like or do. I put them outside. they look like tall (about 8-9") clumps of grass. I dug them up, kept one and gave the others away. Mine is now about 12-14"tall, with very little care. It sits in a corner and I often find my cat beating it up. I will take it out in spring and divide and grow it again.
I first came across Lemongrass about 25 yrs ago. I was younger and hitching around Mexico. This is like a dream.Up in the mountains, on a foggy cold day, i stopped in a cafe (it was just an open hut) there were a couple of older ladies stirring some grass in a pot. I always make friends with the kitchen. They said this is Lemongrass tea, tea of love. They were giggling like schoolgirls. Since then i always wanted to try it again, finally got my chance .My plant did not bloom but maybe next yr.

Such interesting stuff about Lemon Grass. I like it in stir-fry and Tai dishes. I always have thought of it as an
annual, but I could pot it up., oh yes, thanks. I hear in warmer climates it gets really big...soooo how big I ask! I am that Zone 7/8 person,

Because I live in zone 4 I treat lemon grass as annual. I purchase a cut bunch from the supermarket about this time of year, trim the tops, stick in water until they root and pot them up. My cats love to shred them to pieces, so I don't keep the plants inside over winter.
