Lily Seed Question

(Zone 6a)

What would happen if I saved the seed from one of my lilies this summer? I know it probably wouldn't come true....But would it grow well? Just something I thought of.......

Don't see why not. Mine have sprouted amazingly enough from the unlabeled seeds I naively saved...Next year the labeling will be a bit more ruthless!

(Now the hard part will be to see if I can baby them along to the blooming stage!)

Thanks esw! So how do you get the seeds to sprout? Do you just stick them in soil like any other seed? Or do you do something special for them?

Thanks,
Steve

There are a bunch of 'how-to's' on the internet.....I have only just tried this last year and this....last year planted in small pots....they have overwintered and have sprouted this spring. This fall I 'planted' a bunch in baggies....some have sprouted immediately and sent up grasslike shoots....some made small bulbs immediately, some just got ready....those I put in the cold for 3 months or so and have just brought them out....looking at the seeds, they have swollen and little bulbs are forming there, ready to break out.....I put the seed mixture from the baggies on top of my seed germinating mix in a pot... and will keep them barely moist. We'll see if they make sprouts this spring/summer or they may wait until next year if I am not incorrect.

There are many others here who do/have done this successfully and could give you excellent advice, they have sure helped me!

Thanks again! So you put the seeds in the pots in the fall them bury the pots in the ground? Then the seed sprouts in the spring?
Maybe I'll hear from some of the others too...like Beaker whos helped me alot. I appreciate all the help I can get!

Thanks,
Steve
