This Spring my adult blue spruce seems less blue. It seems pretty healthy, no visible bugs, excessive needle drop or browning; and the treatment of the tree and its environment has not changed over the last year. No sprays, no new driveways, etc. Maybe the mild winter had an impact on it??? I have had conflicting advice on how to make it more blue, including a) you can't control the color, it has to do with the wax on the needles; b) use a evergreen/conifer fertilizer high in nitrogen; c) don't use a fertilizer high in nitrogen; and d) plant a copper pipe underneath it.
I love this tree and I don't want to do anything to hurt it. What should I be doing? Is the loss of blue a sign of poor health? Can you successfully amend a blue spruce and make it more blue?
Thanks!
Blue Spruce - losing Blue?
The blue colour does tend to wear off a bit in winter, particularly if it was windy. The new foliage in spring will be fully blue again and soon hide the older faded foliage.
