Trellis for my MG's

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I'd like to know the best kind of trellis for MG's that will stay in a pot. Usually I put them outside and let them climb chicken wire or a chain link fence. Since I'm short on seeds I want to keep these in the greenhouse and make sure I don't get any unwanted crosses.

I can't believe they already have buds on them!!

Nice seedlings...what are you growing?

How big a container are you using?

Hi Joseph,

The one on the right is Blue Picotee. The ones on the left I'm not 100% sure of. The popsicle stick I use for identification was blurry. It looked like Violet Ring. When it flowers I'll take a picture and get a positive ID.

For now they are in 1 gallon pots .. they will be moved to 2 gallon pots when I'm ready for a trellis.

I really need to be able to translate volume of pots to diameter of the container, somehow there has to be a way to remember. Can you help me, X?

Hi Gerris,

I think this page might help

Thanks, X! I would use the 7 gallon container or beyond if you are growing the MGs outdoors. That way you will be able to anchor the trellis and it will not be topheavy when all the foliage develops.

I am having good luck with a spiral type trellis that is stretched skyward on a bamboo cane of about 3-4 feet in a 3 gallon pot in my indoors sunroom this winter and spring. I have Laurrie's Berry Ice growing on it and it is almost up to the top. Once it reaches the top I will prune it so it will fill in the trellis with growth from lateral shoots.

Thanks Joseph! .. did you make the trellis yourself? If yes, how and include pictures please!

I bought it from an online vendor. It only stretches upwards about 3 feet. You can buy them directly from the manufacturer or through other 3rd party vendors. Here is the one I am playing with:

Gerris,
That place is in England; where in the States can they be purchased?

Thanks

X and Arlene et. al,

I did a google search on term spiraclimb and saw that Logee's is selling it. You could probably shop around and find the best deal on the product.

Joseph,

That's a great idea...spirals to grow MGs on!!!

Am thinking I can probably fashion a few of those out of the barbed wire we use back at the ranch (sans the barbs of course, I'd remove those with a pair of pliers). When we remove the wire from the coil it pretty much retains it shape until it is stretched out for fencing.

Cool idea, Cat! Do you use chainmail gloves to keep your fingers safe from the barbs?

Here is a picture of the Spiraclimb with Laurrie's Berry Ice all over it. The plant is almost to the top of the trellis.

And a closeup of the wire with leaves.
