My wife purchased the American Horticultural Society's Plant Propagation book. I love it! I've done a lot of cuttings in the past, but this book has really inspired me to take on some plants I had never thought of. However, there are many references to using a "fungicidal solution" when first watering cuttings. I cannot find any suggestions for specific brands in the book, and fungicides in the store don't say that they are specifically for propagating. I purchased Daconil, but haven't opened it. Does any one know if this will work, and what concentration I should use?
How to prepare a "fungicidal solution"
Bavistin is one you can use if you can find it. I just use bleach and water - one part bleach to ten parts water.
To prepare a "fungicidal solution" you are either treating a specific fungus and then you use the appropriate fungicide or you are apply what is know as a preventative application-which is what I think you want. The most common funguses for what you are doing is rhizoctonia-stem rot, and pythium or phytopthera root rot. They use different fungicides to treat the first from the last two I mentioned.
I use a solution of Clearys and Subdue or Truban for preventative solution, but these are hard to get. Many people here have had good luck with hydrogen peroxide solutions (mixed with water-I think its 1 cup hydrogen to 1 gal h2o)
Daconil is used more for foliar fungus-but it can be used for rhizoctonia-but it doesn't work as a preventative because it is not a real sysytemic-in other words you have to have the fungus before you use the Daconil.
If using bleach it should be in a gallon. Ultra = lye, in three quart jugs may damage plants.
Phytophthera is not a fungus. DNA testing is doing all kind of strange things. The asexual generation of Protists had been classified as fungi, but the sexual generations were plants and animals. Protists alternate. Phytophthera is closely related to Giant Brown Kelp. The one cell swimming generation of both are very similar.
Many of us here have great sucess with 1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide (Drugstore brown bottle) in 1 gallon of water. Best of luck

Thanks everybody. I think I'll use the H202. It is much less expensive and environmentally friendly.
