The Lovely but little known Mexican Buckeye.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mexican Buckeye, Ungnadia speciosa,is a Native Texas large shrub or small tree, that can grow up to 15 feet tall, so it is suitable for small spaces.
It blooms at about the same time as the Redbud, anf the flowers are similar in color, but the form is very different.
It likes sun or partial shade, and it is drought tolerant, cold hardy, and fairly fast growing.
The beautiful flowers.

The little tree is very attractive, the leaves look a lot like Pecan.

The seedpods are very interesting, and the seeds have a good germination rate.

Hi Josephine,

I was just looking at the wax myrtle that I almost lost last yr to the drought, wondering if I may lose it after all. I was wondering what I might replace it with if it does go south, and look what you have posted!

As a small tree, can you limb it up enough to be able to stand under it? Are birds attracted to it? What color are the laeves in the fall?

Lake Dallas, TX

Mexican buckeye rocks. It has a really nice golden yellow fall color. It is very hard to find in the DFW area though. Frostweed, do you have any you might trade? I could use a couple small plants.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes you can prune it to a higher level, although it tends to be multitrunked, sort of like a Crepe Myrtle. The bees and butterflies love the flowers, but the seeds are too large for the birds, although the squirrels love them.
The leaves turn a lovely golden color in the fall, and they move very gracefully with the slightest breeze.

Tobydmv, I am sorry but I don't have any Mexican Buckeye plants right now, let me check at home and see if i have any seeds.
Are you going to the All Texas R.U.?

Frostweed , This tree looks nice.Does it have any problem with insects or diseases? We have a Bradford pear that I think was planted in the wrong area and will get too tall and wide. How wide would you say this gets?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have never seen insects or disease on it, it looks good all the time.
I would say it gets about 10 feet wide max.

Josephine, I have 3 (I think) Mex Buckeye seedlings, but I don't know what to do with them, because until we get the next stage of our pond done I don't have a place for it. I plan on taking 2 to the RU, but I'm wondering if it can live in a pot for a year or so? Well I guess I really should take them all to the RU because it may be even more than a year and I know they need a good home now. Do they really have to have sun all day?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

They don't have to have sun all day, and you really shoud keep one or two for yourself. You can keep them in a pot for at least two years, so if you think you can use them, it will be better if they are a little bigger when you plant them in the open.

Mary Lee, if you take any of your seedlings to the RU. May I have one? I have a number of named Brug rooted cuttings

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok, I'll keep one. That leaves 2 for the RU. I need to check my Haves list to be sure but I don't think anybody has spoken for either of them.

Save one for me Marylee. :)

Hello,

for anybody looking for Mexican buckeye, try North haven garden in Dallas. They have several of the tree in 5Gal pots for $29.95/ea. Also have red buckeye in 1Gal pots for $9.99/ea. Good luck.

Oh Boy Sita, that makes it even more appealing for me. lol

Hi City Sylvia,

when I called North Haven Gardens last , they have 10 1Gal pots of red buckeye. Guess not too many people are intersted in them. I was going to buy some more, but I already received 8 seedlings from Arkansas. These little guys lost all their leaves, but the stems (trunks?) are still green, so hopefully they will survive. I hate to order plants bare-rooted, but I have no choice. There is only one nursery that did send me potted plants, some even in 15Gal. size, and it is located in California. Very nice people, have been their customer since 1998.

I bought a 5Gal red buckeye from Redenta's nursery and decided to locate it in full sun. So far it is doing very well, some tip of leaves scorches, but otherwise ok. I mist and water it daily, because it is not yet planted in the ground. If it continues doing well, it will be planted there.

If you should buy one, please post your experiences with it. Take care and good luck.

I might just go take a look at it to see what it looks like . I donr live too far from NH gardens.

If anyone needs seeds, I have some. The seeds and leaves are poisonous by the way.
