Banana clusters

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have several different kinds of bananas. This first one is Orinoco. I don't care for the fruit(it has an apple taste), but lots of my friends love them to fry. The trees are huge and the trunks are sturdy.
We've had terrible winds this spring, the leaves on this one are pretty tattered.

This is Pisang Ceylon. This is the first time it has bloomed. The plant is small to medium height, but the trunk is sturdy. The fruits are reddish color when the petal first opens.

Marcy, so glad they're growing for you. They love the heat.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Now here is a question. This tree looks like Orinoco and I had several of them. The flower looks exactly like the Orinoco flower...............but the fruit does not. It isn't held on the stem like orinoco, it isn't the same color either.

Well do not ask me. But WOW to you too. I just love this look. They look so amazing hanging down like that. I may have to dye mine.

Are you going to send me banana box, Susie?

Your yard is a jungle for sure.

Kell, do you want a banana box? Which kind do you want?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Susie, those are AWESOME!

Be careful, Kell - Cala's just ornery enough to send you a banana BOX -better specify that she put banana FRUITS in it! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. You are so right! She is not ever to be trusted.

No Susie, I would if I lived next door to you though. LOL. I am not supposed to even eat bananas. Baby loves them though. I also feed them to my staghorns.

I just showed your pics to my DH. He is tough, I was going on about it and living there, he was not moved by your tropical yard. At all. LOL!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, tell him that if you sell your house there, you can take the money, buy a HUGE house here and have enough left over for a maid for years! There are even nice homes with large lots for sale. My lot is 1.6 acres of usable land. The land around the resaca isn't counted as usable, which would make my lot about 2 acres.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

NOOOOOOOO that would be the wrong argument to put forth. He would envision 2 acres of packed plants. Maybe if I tell him there is a law you have to have 75% lawn at each house he would force me to move there. LOL The maid pat would sure make him happy,. I have failed miserable at that job for years. He wishes he coud fire me or at least never pay me again.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I only gots one thing to say. I sure wish I was a monkey in your yard! eeee eeee eeee. LOL Those are beautiful!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Badseed, we have three or four clusters that are ripe now(yes, they will eventually ripen on the tree if you don't pick them). Sometimes a baby possum visits and he LOVES nanas. He is so cute climbing up the tree and stealing bananas.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Wow! And I thought my nanner tree was loaded! I'm up to four hands so far, and still opening....with about 12 nanners per hand. I'm trying to persuade my cousin that we need to make the world's largest nanner pudding for the tomato festival in June.

Susie, did you just relate me to a possum??

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

wow Susie you wil be making nanner pudding and sending to all the neighbors.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bamabelle, are you close to Sand Mountain?
Michele, I would never say you were related to a possum(but he was real cute)
Donna, the neighbors all roll their eyes now when they see me coming toward them with bananas! (they do like the banana bread though)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hmmm, not sure if I am offended or not. I'd be thrilled to see you show up with bananas though. You've seen my chimps! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Lauren said it was time for a road trip!

Chickamauga, GA(Zone 7a)

Oh my goodness those are great pics!! How many times do you get big stalks like that full of fruit in a year? Sorry this is just amazing to me since I have never really seen bananas on a tree LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Right now I probably have 9 or 10 stalks. They form year round.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Susie, what is the best tasting banana that you grow? I would like to plant a couple but I really want to enjoy the fruit also.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You coming to Ohio Susie? I'm sure the kids would be thrilled. How do you two feel about bunk beds? You can pay for your stay in bananas or back breaking labor or professional advice or just smile, we'll let you stay. LOL Our messy laundry room is much smaller now and you can go in if you can fit! hahahaha Hmmm, were you talking to me? LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Frannie, the best tasting one so far is the Dwarf Cavendish. I have heard the Pisang Ceylon is excellent but this is its first bloom.
There is one that grows wild here called "Lady Finger" by the locals. It is a cavendish of some kind. It is very good too.
Michele, yes I was talking to you. Lauren was just wondering yesterday how many people we could manage to visit in a week to ten days.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Hey Susie and Lauren don't forget to swing down this way on your road trip. You can come visit bunches of us lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey now Donna, are you trying to snag my company? LOL Which route takes you through MS and OH? LOL

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey Cala...If you come to visit Chele..then you have to come see me too!! I like bananas!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Looks like she'll have to name this trip "Banana Run". LOL

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Chele can head your way and circle around to down here then straight across to Tx. I am sure she can find lots of stops along the way lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL How many bridges are there??

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Susie. I will definitely get one or two of th ones that you mentioned. The grandkids would love seeing how bananas grow and eating fresh ones also.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Banana Run sounds good Chele! Kinda reminds you of those moonshine runs...LOL!!!

Bedtime here...I'm getting slaphappy!! Nite all!!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

let's just say she won't be using 2 of them on Hwy 90. The Bay St. Louis and Biloxi/Ocean Springs bridge are both completey gone. But traveling I-10 is faster anyway. Roz and I both live above I-10 anyway lol. Will be years before they are rebuilt. Our bridge there is no telling. Biloxi and OS are fighting over what kind and have not even begun to clean out the rubble. They are both responsible for paying for it since each town starts right in the middle of the water lol

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

Does anyone know anything about a banana tree called musa basjoo? It is supposed to be hardy through zone 5. I am attacing a link to the Jackson & Perkins website.

I don't care about the fruit, but I would like the tree if it would work. Also, I'd like to get an idea of how fast they grow.

Right after I posted this, I noticed a seperate thread for this plant. Sorry. I will respond to that thread instead

Well, here is what we wanted to do: Go see Donna and Roz, stop in Hattiesburg to visit a friend, go to Nashville to see my aunt, go to Knoxville to see Mel, stop and see Peggy in KY, see Chele in Ohio and come home. We may have to move the Nashville stop to after Ohio, or get Chele to come to Peggy's in KY if we run out of time. Of course how much traveling we can do depends on how high gas is by that time!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You need to add some stops between me and Texas so you have somewhere to rest!! LOL Go over to Indiana and back down, or zig zag from there.

It's okay pennefeather! We often invade each other's posts. So far as I know, Basjoo should be hardy to six but from what I know from my friends, it's iffy. I've not been brave enough to leave them out.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Well dang, Cala! I guess I don't count!! BTW, I am right on the IN border here!
Like Chele said...you need to have rest stops! Hellooooo?
