Roughleaf Dogwood, Cornus drummondii, is a Native Texas shrub or small tree, that grows 8 to 15 feet tall, with lovely flowers in the spring and small berries that the birds love.
The squirrels like them too, so much so, that I never get to see them ripened.
The leaves are shiny green similar to the redbud leaves. This is a great tree for a fence row, since it tends to sucker.
I have had mine for seven years and I love it.
Josephine.
The Lovely and Hardy Roughleaf Dogwood
I have it in the yard and growing wild at the edges of the pasture. The birds love it. I just saw three indigo buntings on it today, and orioles, blue-gray gnatcatchers, phoebes, and mockingbirds also visit it, when it's in bloom, for insects, I guess, and to get the berries. It suckers prolifically here, which is fine with me.
Thank you for letting us know about your experience with this tree. It is nice to know that others like it too.
Josephine,
