Rose of Sharon-Hibiscus syriacus

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I bought a new house in the fall and one of the few plants here is a double mauve flowered rose of sharon. It's sort of neat and less usual than you see a lot. When is the best time to try to root cuttings? I don't see seedlings popping up around the large plant. Being the play baby I am, I may just try tip cuttings now. So anyway, when is the best time, what age wood and how long to root? Anyone have experience? Thanks! Michele

I don't have any hands-on experience with Rose of Sharon, but my book says to take softwood cuttings of H. syriacus in early to late summer, hardwood cuttings in late autumn to the middle of winter. Layering can be done from spring through summer.

You should have a higher rate of success with your cuttings if you use rooting compound and bottom heat.
