Plant ideas for a "white" So. facing wall

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 9b)

Help Please
I need some ideas for a south facing white wall a block from the beach. I need plants that are drought tolerant and can withstand sandy soil and coastal breezes. I'm thinking of buddleja, grevillea, maybe a banksia....I need something tall, but not to tall.

Dwarf citrus, especially an everbearing kind like a Meyer Lemon, will give you that lovely floral scent, and tasty treats for the kitchen. (How tall is not-too-tall? We have a Meyer lemon in a container that's still, and will likely remain below waist-high; even plunked in the ground they won't get taller than 8-11 feet). I suppose that means there's bonsai and then there's bonsai...

Buddleja, butterfly bush, is gorgeous and would work well, I think.

Some of the flowering sage varietals, like a scarlet sage?

Lavendar's hardy; there are shorties as well as Provençal that'll grow hip-high and doesn't mind being trimmed.

An upright rosemary would bask there happily. Again, there I go with the culinary herbs: trim your hedge and stuff a chicken! Mmm...

I look forward to hearing what you decide on.

Great minds think alike!!
I am putting in a Meyer Lemon-maybe one with flying dragon root stock. That way it won't get over 6 feet. It's in the center of the planting bed.
I have lavender, California lavender to be exact. Maybe a couple of sages for the different foliage they offer and all the color. I have a rosemary...which needs some trimming.
I'm going into my library and checking out my Aussie books for some ideas for plants. I'll let you know what I come up with?

Too tall would be over 20 feet.
Chicken sounds good! But I put a tri-tip on the ole' barbie and got green beans on the stove.
Time for dinner-Yum!

Some nice drought tolerant palms of course

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 9b)

Palms are too tall and the neighbors would not appreciate it. Don't want to block anyones ocean view. People in MB are very picky about their view!

I LOVE palms! I have a triangle that looks awesome. I got him when he was a baby. I've got a few babies (palms-of course) Dirrerent species of palms. My favorite-King palm. I have three that have gotten so big.

Thanks for the idea palmbob

There are litterally hundreds of species of palms that only get up to about 3-4' tall... so don't discount palms. Though most of those short ones wouldn't want to be in full sun. Cycads would be a great plant if ultimate height, and full sun exposure is expected.

MB24U, I hope you can keep your Meyer small. The only small ones I've seen are in pots. By nature it is actually an 8x8' bush -- on average, I've seen them get taller and wider than that. When you see them as trees they have been grafted or trained, and grafted means the plant will still be trying to grow to another 8' on top of the rootstock.

They don't appreciate competition. I have two in mixed beds and must feed them constantly, compared to the one that grows all by its happy lonesome. They shade the ground around them heavily and if you want to grow stuff with them, either it stays on the perimeter or you will need to prune the Meyer heavily, which will reduce fruiting.

Thanks you for the information. I actually put in a Eureka with Flying Dragon root stock in the ground. They generally stay below 4'. I also got a hold of some Thumbelina Leigh lavender to put around it.

I have a Meyer lemon growing in Aptos. I don't know how long it has been there, at least 25 years. It is at least twelve feet tall and as big around. It is so prolific it supplies all of my neighbors and then some.
