Goutweed vs. Maple tree

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I have a very large maple tree in my very small front yard. The only thing that will grow near it are dandelions. Grass doesn't take. I bought 5 plants yesterday of the variegated goutweed. I'm going to dig holes in between the large roots, amend the soil, plant the goutweed, and fertilize. What are the chances that it will become the groundcover I want it to? Tamara

If it's not too late already, spray Glyphosate first to kill whatever grass and weeds are there; then in a few days apply a mulch layer; THEN plant your new plants into the mulch. If they thrive you can buy more, and if they die you learned something without buying too many of them.

I would think twice before planting Bishop's Weed. It will grow, but it is a very invasive, difficult to control plant.

I second Scott, I would never plant Bishope's weed again. It is very, very invasive.

Well, it's better than dandelions and weeds, and it grows well in dry shade. No need to amend the soil or fertilize the goutweed, save your money.

I understand it is invasive, but I do grow it here and it would work under your tree, I have it under my maple tree, if it gets out into the yard, I just mow it off, I think each persons post above makes sense with their experience, but I say plant it under that tree and let it do what it does best. I think it will work for what you want it too, but be careful if you have neighboring flower beds or places you dont' want it to grow.

Nothing, not even goutweed could possibly compete with this maple tree. There are large patches of just plain dirt because the weeds can't even grow there. So...we shall see just how tough goutweed is. Tamara
