After seeing your pictures, Scott, I've come to the conclusion I either need a new camera or photography lessons. Wouldn't you agree A. japonicum has the prettiest flowers of the genus?

Of the trees I know, A. japonicum is the best. My tree is just a second year graft, and I literally shot the picture of these flowers about six inches from the ground. I can hardly imagine what a nice-sized A. japonicum in full-bloom must look like. Hopefully, I live long enough...

I have to give my camera most of the credit. I've learned a few tricks to get it to focus on objects close up, but the exposure, the focusing, and the clarity of the detail are all automatic. Again and again I am amazed at how well this camera adapts for poor lighting, back lighting, and other normal obstacles to automatic photography.

A long time ago I used to be heavily involved in film photography and I learned how to manipulate film exposure and paper and chemical processes, and also how to use classical elements to compose an image, and that might help me some, but the quality of the camera and the digital process makes everything so easy. It's a simple as get a good, clear image, bring it inside, crop it if necessary, and it's done, and with a grain and color quality better than anything up to Kodachrome 25.

The funny thing is, I bought a digital Olympus about five years ago, a 2.3 megapixel thing. I was so disappointed in it I almost had no desire to try it again. I am so glad I did.
