Aspen Fruit Galls

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

I've not noticed these previously on our aspens, but several have them this year. I was unable to find a larva inside. Anybody have an ID for this?

Thanks --

What member of the aspen family did this twig come from? As much of our "forest" land seems to be managed to promote the aspen now-a-days you would think this a common thing up here north of the frozen tundra; however I have never observed them here. I will check in new growth, five years past essentially clear cut, and on quaking and bigleaf tree limbs left from past winters cut down on neighbor's property. Nice pic though, of a "problem" of not much impact on the rocket like growth of our preferred "paper" tree. Ken

I found them on several female Populus tremuloides, but not on adjacent P. grandidentata or P. tremula. That's not to say they might not be there too.

As you can see, some of the fruit capsules matured successfully while adjacent ones galled. I bet someone on this forum knows what they are, but I figured you would most likely be that person since you're in the heart of Command Central for aspen. Maybe the gallmaker is not hardy that far north?

I just learned from Salicaceae (for those of you who remember him on GW) that it's a relatively harmless fungus gall caused by Taphrina johansonii. We need our Minneapolis contingent to persuade Salicaceae to join us here at DG! How 'bout it guys?
