Any west Michiganders here...

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Looks iffy at this point but if we go I will be sure to look for you. :)

Ludington, MI

Hello. I'm from west Mich. I live in Ludington, north of Muskegon. I have had malformed flowers this year. Anyone else have that?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

lynn - welcome!! I have some malformed flowers every year - but each year it's a different kind!

We camp at Ludington every year - our favorite park!! And I always love the petunias they put along the main drag...always looks so nice!!

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi Gang
Just checking in. Been busy cooling off. When it gets over 80 I go inside
to sweat, sometimes to nap. I can't take the heat.

I am trying to garden in the mornings. Moved two spruce about 3' high
today, and 2 roses. I am heeling in a Grimaldi that insists on dying, I
don't know why. Might have gotten winter stressed.

I have 5 14' native birches I transplanted last week to the driveway. they
are totally dead on top, but I hope that the roots will come alive. I try to keep
them watered. I shlep about 20 gallons a few times a week down to them.
This drought has been misery.

Our soybean crop this year is the best around. The state came to look and
marvel at it. I would say weed free and not thin. We have 30 acres planted
around the house.

I would love to have a get together even at my house! We have lots of room
and can have campers and RV's if you are so inclined.
Room for campfires and we have a nice stream for swimming and fishing.
it is a stocked stream. anytime is fine for my DH and I. Just pick a date
and we will stock the fridge with beer, pop, lemonade.

Regards,
sheri

where are all the members that posted here?

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm still here...why?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

still hanging around too!!!

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Did the West Mich people ever have a gathering?
I have a sister who lives in Vicksburg ... south of kalamazoo.
If you WM gardeners have a gathering this year, maybe I can make it out there to visit her and go to a plant swap.

Sure wish Sis was a gardener. She takes a few things I offer, but her 2 dogs tear up the back yard. She likes bulbs the best, the dogs have less time to destroy them than the perinneals..

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

cottage rose there just isnt much activity in the Michigan forum and I wonder why with so many members

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

well, let's make it a new year's resolution to all check in here daily....

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Alright! So the U.P. didn't get disowned then ;)

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I never seem to get much of a response from any topics I've tried to post here so I basically gave up. I post regularly on the rose forum where its more active.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

I try to keep this forum going to but it takes all of us-im sure we have things to yak about!!
Like this crazy weather 50s!! Can we just skip the rest of winter and head into spring-im so ready!!!

I need to cut back my roses this spring-they went crazy and i cant even till around them without donating lots of BLOOD!!!

well i hope more people start posting somewhere in the mich forum!!! :)

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm in from the garden - yes you read that right...in from the garden!!! I've been out there for several hours (well only 2) cleaning things up. Can you imagine doing that in December and in just a sweatshirt. Also walked around and did an inventory of my hellebores - I have 19 of them and they are doing wonderfully. If you haven't tried them in Michigan - you really should. Them bloom forever and are so gorgeous...I tossed a bunch of seeds around the 'mother' plants in hope that I get some seedlings.

DH is revamping the GH for me. We built the shelves to withstand a ton of weight - really overkill. I wish we'd gone with something not so sturdy and heavy looking. Oh well. I'd like to take a chair, pop and a book out there and just sit for awhile, but I'm not sure that would sit well with the better half...LOL

Back to the weed patch aka garden...

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

notmartha
I know what you mean...I run 2 msn forums of my own.
I guess I've gotten a little burned out on being a cheerleader.
I'm not upset, just don't have the time to post as much as I use to
now that I have a new job.
Thanks for your efforts with the Michigan forum here on DG.
It is appreciated. :)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I post in the NE and UMW forums and they are pretty slow right now also. People will reply to posts, but aren't starting many new topics. It comes and goes I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi SW Michigan here

I am thinking of having a plant get together here this spring.
We can provide food and plenty of parking. Would anyone
be interested in a plant swop. a plant give away, a plant
cuttings gifts, seeds, vegies, trees?

We could also get some master gardeners here to talk
about specific gardening to our area. I would be interested
in soil amendments for clay, without resorting to peats,
and also, how to combat the bag worms taking over
our forests. I also would like to know more about the
Ash borers and what I can do to stem their tide. (PUN)

Lets think ahead and try to set a date. We are in the
tip top of Barry County, just outside of Freeport, which
is East of Middleville as the crow flies.

Regards,
sheri williams

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Im from Plainwell and its gis turning out to be a wonderful spring.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Well thank goodness...at least its Spring somewhere in Michigan! ;o)

Hudsonville, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi - I'm newer to DG. Live in Hudsonville now (but always in the W Mich area.) Just moved from total shaded area to middle of an old alfalfa field full of clay. Feel like I am starting all over trying to figure out what grows and what doesn't. So much fun.
Have no extra plants to swap yet. . .I'm still trying to fill the new space.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Welcome Naber - I'm just east of you!! Have two gardens in clay (pain in the patootie!) others in sand. I need black fertile earth!!

Otsego, MI(Zone 5b)

I just found this thread !! I'm from SW Michigan too. I made a post a month or so ago about having a Round Up, maybe there is hope for one yet.

Due West of Kazoo, MI(Zone 5b)

South West Michigan here......due west out of Kazoo about 15 miles from the lake.
Just joined the site while finishing up my Master Gardener Volunteer final exam.
I've dabbled in gardening ever since Daddy had me plant some radishes at about age 7.
15 acres mostly woods and lots of trails, shade garden, veggie garden, water garden, shiitake patch, several perennial beds...and a never ending battle with russian olive and bittercress.....grrrrrrr

How bout that late freezing week with 2 rounds of 6'' of WET snow?!?!
I lost half a Jap Maple and all the poor blooming daffy's bit the dust, didn't hurt the garlic tho.
Things are warming up and most plants are perservering!!

Grand Rapids, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi folks, I live in the Grand Rapids area and have been a DG member for a couple of years.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

I can't believe it's been a year since I posted here! Here I am again planting herbs and getting ready for the Feast of The Strawberry Moon .
http://www.tri-citiesmuseum.org/straw_moon.php I wish you'd all come! It's so much fun!
I'm a volunteer every year and I always have a tussie mussie or bunch of herbs tucked in my costume, hoping that someone I've "met" at gardening forums or re-enacting forums, will recognise me. LOL! Quite a few posting here are only a hop skip and jump from Grand Haven.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh ya I remember you mentioning that last year. Where is that festival located again and what kind of festival is it again?? Maybe if I'm not working I will try to make it....and what is your name again?
Menopause brain here...
Vicky ;o)

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Just looked at the link...where is Harbor Island?

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

Are you familiar with Grand Haven? The island can be reached at the draw bridge going to Spring Lake. There's a sign there that points the way to the island (it's an exit off of 31 at the bridge), and the weekend of the Feast there will be huge Feast advertisements there too.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

It is a reenactment, or some would say Living History event, centering around Fur trade, logging and French Indian War, most of the 1700's.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I know where the draw bridge is....is the way to the island on Spring lake or Grand Haven side?

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

Grand Haven side.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

So when you go over the drawbridge heading over to GH where is the entrance?
