Grow MG's Horizontally?

Providence, RI(Zone 6b)

Is it possible to grow MG's up and then horizontally across a 4' x 30' fence of chicken wire? I understand that they like to grow up, up, up and don't know if this would work. If not, is there another easy, flowering annual vine that would cover a fence this size by growing horizontally? Thanks.

Hi Tangerine,

When I have MG's on my chain link fence, I just weave it in and out of the links as it grows and make a u-turn to the second link up when it reaches the end of your wire. If you want something that will totally cover a fence and makes nice hibiscus like flowers, try luffa vine. At the end of the season you can dry the fruit if you don't cut it off and have luffa sponges.

You might look in to Clitoria ternatea white. I see Calailiy still has some for SASE in the seed trading froum. It also comes in a wonderful Double blue that would give you more of the MG like look if thats the look you were after.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm going to look into them all. I've never grown a vine...only ripped out pesky ones that I didn't want. Good to know that I can actually weave a morning glory horizontally in and out of links and make u-turns to continue upward. That is exactly what I wanted to know.

I haven't tried MGs on something as short as 4' tall before, but was successful in weaving on a 6 ft chain link. I grew Heavenly Blue, and while "common", it always makes for a lovely show. When I thought about it, I trimmed the vines when they got more than a foot above the fence, otherwise they seemed perfectly happy to go up past the fence for two feet or so, supported by the mass of intertwining vines, and then lean over and "drape" downwards. Have fun!
