Flowering red-leafed peach at rowe arboretum

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I'm unsure of the cultivar name of this peach, but it's a real peach. Has red foliage all summer, and check out these flowers! I saw it also last summer and it seemed to suffer none of the things that always afflict peaches. I happened to spot as few pits on the ground and these have germinated at about 50%. All feature red foliage.

And one more after that. I'll try to find out the cultivar name.

Don't know how many of these there are out there on the market, but one I see most commonly around here is "Bonfire".

Saw one at a waterpark somewhere in the last few years, and there were red-leafed suckers popping up here and there for 15 ft around it, making me think that it was a seed-grown selection on its own roots. Since many peach seedlings are very similar in appearance and fruit quality to their 'mother', it may be that some nurseries are just growing out red-leafed seedlings and selling them.

Hi Lucky,

Indeed, just found out this afternoon that the selection is "Bonfire." It had one or two seedlings and/or suckers beneath it, all of them red. I have grown about eight seedlings from it, again, all red. A friend has done likewise to the same effect.

I found after posting this that the one picture I didn't post of this tree was the best one, so here is one more picture.

When in bloom, it almost looks like a kwanzan cherry.

Beautiful pictures, Scott, of a beautiful tree. Thanks for sharing, and I agree: that last one is the best!
Cheers!

Scott, can you take a follow up picture sometime of the foliage. The few pics I have seen on the internet look almost fake. I haven't seen anything on its fall color either if you want to go back in the fall also. While your at it.....

I forgot to say please, sorry.

Beautiful and yes, please can you continue the photos like next would be when they leaf out, etc. and the bark, I am so curious now to see if this IS the tree I photographed at BIL property!!
Thanks for steering me to your thread.

A spokesperson from Rowe Arboretum confirmed it is 'Bonfire' (they sent us a note at our helpdesk today, in response to your post here.)

We have an entry for it in PlantFiles here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/74857/index.html

I hope you'll consider adding your photos and a comment, and the ZIP code for you and/or the arboretum.

Yes Scott, wonderful photos, please add them to plantfiles :)

Oops! Now Rowe knows I grubbed around under their tree for seeds! I hope I'm not banned.

I was thinking the same thing--Scott....errrrr...I mean Steve, yea, Steve, is now BUSTED for seed rustling.

Scott, if you are at the arboretum maybe swing by this one again and see how it looks. I was just curious. Any colors in OH yet? I will be passing through later this week.

Thanks

Bill, thanks for bumping this - we just saw this plant at Lowe's this morning and weren't familiar with this cultivar. We were intrigued with the dark foliage from afar and had to check it out - only one left! Thinking now maybe we should go back and pick it up - anyone growing this?

Here's a shot of a different Rowe Arboretum specimen of Bonfire taken last week. This plant is in some shade, and it had gone green. The full-sun specimen still had a lot of purple left in it, but it had faded a bit from its color in the shot taken in spring.

Flowers are pretty amazing. Do peach flowers smell? Good?

Leftward,

No, unfortunately, no fragrance. But what color and grace!
