Briefly touching base - Begonia & Gessie Heaven

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's some more good news. The BIG sale is coming up on the 5th of May and I've been given a budget to go plant shopping at the wholesale nursery to buy blooming streps and non-stop begonias to sell! So exciting!

Hopefully my gessie society magazine comes today, the seed list is supposed to be in there and that's where I can order from. Yea!!

Here's a photo with a Micro-mini sinningia and chirita tamiana I brought home yesterday to repot.

Also there's a section in the growing area where they put freebie plants. I can take what ever I want from that section. I brought home a hebe and some other weird plant yesterday. I have to go look it up.

Well Lali girl. I just want to add my big CONGRATULATIONS!!

You are so lucky but even more so they are so lucky to get someone like you. I know you will do a fantastic job for them. You are just the type of person they need. I just know you must be so chuffed.

I am truly thrilled for you.

gosh what is the one with such weird crinkle leaves. You know I love it. LOL

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't know its genus Kell, Just bought it as 'gesneriad' - I'm quite certain it's going to be finicky here, I'm going to put it in a jar since I'm sure it want's humidity. It looks like nautilocalyx (sp) but I can't find it on the web.

Luarie ! I have always wanted a HeBe what is my chances of getting one ?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Laurie your picture above with the three plants. The one on the left looks like an Episcia
.Some where along the line of Episcia 'Black Star'
All you are doing is so exciting ! They will want you full time !

I could be off, but I think that crinkly leaved thingy looks like one of the Pileas.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Your chances are HUGE, they had a dozen sitting in the freebie lot. All different kinds. I brought home a variegated but there were ones with tiny green leaves, large variegation etc. keep in mind that they are in 1 & 2 gallon cans and I'll have to ship with most of the soil removed for weight purposes.

Nan, it does look like a pilea, but it's not. When it flowers, I will have better luck with id. Here's what I found that is similar.

what got me excited about it was this one in the lower left of the terrarium at the AVSA sale/show in Sacramento. I saw it and was like a girl on a mission! I found some similar at Belisle or Pat's Pets but now I can't remember. They dont have good photo's at either site.

Laurie what is the name of the bumpy one ?
I had a great gardneing book I bought from out of the County paid a lot dumb dumb me sold it cheap at our yard sale few years back.
It had HEBE's . I'd love a vareigated or most beautiful one you can get. lol I don't mind the size :)) Please.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't know it's name =( I only know that it is a gessie. Just not sure about much more.

the hebe's just so you know are in the give away because they look like they need TLC, but still are not too bad. Mostly lower leaves have fallen off - probably due to over watering since it's mostly volunteers watering and you never know if things get watered twice.

Ok I fount it I think and good pictures !
Nautilocalyx pemphidius

Flower

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

N. pemphidius is a spectacular foliage plant, with attractive white flowers at the center. The emerging and residual calyces give a pleasant mossy effect to the center of the plant, as well. It is not difficult to grow, if kept in a humid environment, such as a large bubble bowl
This species is frequently grown for its unusual bullate/quilted foliage and easy rosette habit (if given enough humidity), although it is not difficult to flower
I probaly could grow here out of bowl

Really cool there are different named Nautilocalyx !
http://gesneriads.ca/genchrys.htm
Some previously known as Episcia's I thought they look close family.
For example Beauitful Nautilocalyx bullatus
T his species, previously known as Episcia tessellata
Fun :))

These Nautilocalix are so beautiful. Are they in the gesneriacea society's seed list?

I will be getting some Episcia free seeds from the GHA. Will have lots of new plants to share.

Lilburn, GA

Duh! Gesneriad not gesneriacea. :O(

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Nautilocalyx has had one species previously reported as fragrant, N. pemphidius. However, I have never noted any fragrance on this species’ small white flowers. Nautilocalyx punctatus, a much larger species, has purple-speckled pale yellow flowers with a faint sweet scent. I would not be surprised to discover that other species in the genus are fragrant.

They might be Spider I'd have to look the list is long !

Lilburn, GA

Don't worry Allison. I think I will get the journal soon.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

you will enjoy it so much !

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, isn't that cool?!!
It really does look 'pilea-ish'!! lol!
But the flowers surely don't!

Allison, I was lusting after a variegated Hebe for years, myself....got a small start of one last year, and forgot to water it this winter!!!
Didn't even get to see it bloom:(

It was pretty easy to take care of, (but I'm sure it would have appreciated some water!!)
Good luck with yours, and please post bloom photos when you have some!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Nan, It's quite possible that on Sat. I can get two. Don't hold me to it, but I'll see what is still there.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

That would be *fabulous* and sooo kind of you, Lali!
I'd gladly reciprocate in any way you wish!

I won't hold you to it, LOL!!
