Aesculus question

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Two pictures of Aesculus flava (which I had identified here last fall)..I had cut them both down to the ground and now coming up ... one is green and the other one is red. WHY?

Hmmmmm, I don't know why, but the red leaves are sure pretty!

Could it be that the soil is much colder where the red leafed one is planted? I'm assuming it was green last year! If it shows an increased tendency to wilt, and puts on poor growth display, it may be phosphorus deficient. Some plants exhibit this tendency when the soil is cold, and then grow out of it when the soil warms up.

Well these are about ten feet apart...and cut to the ground at the same time. ??

No answers, but a question. Why did you cut them down?

Thornton, IL

Of the five coneflowers I planted last year, one has purple foliage emerging. Any cultural or environmental factors that limit root growth can aggravate deficiency symptoms. For example, this plant is right next to the stone path I put in the flower bed, so the soil may be compacted. Other factors could be too wet or too dry soil, herbicide damage or insect damage, and root pruning by side-dressing knives or cultivators. It will probably be just fine, after the first couple of weeks of May it should start to green up. I hope that's all it is!
