Lily ignoramus needs help with ID

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Yesterday a friend gave me a plant that she'd dug out of her back yard but wasn't sure what it was. The vegetation looks like it might belong to some sort of lily. My friend said it was called "Naked Lady" (?) and that it had 3 big pink flowers that rose up out of the middle but it hadn't been blooming well in her partly shaded garden. It seems to have roots rather than a clearly identifiable bulb or corm, although I didn't get a really good look at it. I'd like to ID it so I know where I can plant it (goodness knows I kill enough plants on a distressingly regular basis :) ).

I'll try to post a picture of the leaves in a day or so...if I can get the camera to work...

Thanks! :)

Lycoris squamigera http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/517/index.html

Don't be terribly disappointed if they don't bloom this year ~ they really dislike being disturbed. The foliage will die back mid summer and the flowers pop up about a month later. Be sure to put a marker by them! Too many times have I noticed a 'naked' spot and decided to plant something there ~ oops!

Thank you! Glad I now know for sure what it is. :)

You just IDd a plant for me at the same time. Thanks!!

Great! Just for the record ~ here are more 'Naked Ladies' that prefer the warmer climes. http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=&searcher[family]=Amaryllidaceae&searcher[genus]=Lycoris&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&Search=Search There is also Amaryllis belladonna which looks very similar to the L. squamigera but likes a very warm climate.

Moby, do you have some sort of barrier around your Naked Ladies? Does it keep them in check? Mine multiply so fast that it seems like I am constantly digging them up.

Really?? Mine don't spread as such, they just sort of clump up.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Mine clump up too but the clumps get bigger and bigger and then spread into the surrounding perennials and shrubs.

Guess I must dig them up to share often enough that I've never had that happen.

You are just too good, Moby. I hate digging them up because they are always crammed in between other plants (I don't have a big enough yard so I pack plants in wherever I see a patch of brown). I put off digging them until it is way too late and then have a gazillion to give away. Nobody I know will take anymore from me. LOL

There always DG to take your extras. Happy Birthday!

Thanks, Moby. I am having a good birthday because we had frost last night and nothing in my yard was damaged. LOL

I won't be digging any Naked Ladies this year since I did the big excavation last year. Next time I divide them I will definitely have to post them on DG.

Same here ~ must have been a huge cold front.
