Come and Sit a Spell... Mid April

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I know I take really hot and really cold weather way too personally, but the weatherman just said we may have triple digit temps the next couple of days. That is ridiculous in mid-April. When I tried to go back outside this evening, it was still 98 degrees and the sun was almost down. I'm going to have to have an air-conditioned gardening canopy that I can take with me around the yard. I have a cheap canopy, but the wind lifts it and tries to take it away. My Great Pyranees has been splashing in her very large water tub and actually emptying it in one day. We wondered how she was doing it until we caught her with both front feet in the tub and "digging."

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, Ester has done a great job with the windows. The material she chose also gives the antique or shabby chic look with the old photos! Guess you will have to look some more for your garden windows. LOL!
The critter you have is a great bug catcher. Before we put siding up, they were all up on the wood under a light out back. We had maybe 15 at a time. They would hide in the shadows and then run out and grab a moth, etc.

Pat, We have had record breaking temps here too. The weather person said a moment ago that it snowed last Easter, I don't remember that one! Guess you don't have to water the area where the dog tub is!

Thank you - I will pass it on to her, she loved them... oh well what can you do?

It hit 100 at our home yesterday! IN April 100??? What is this summer going to be like if we are already hitting such high numbers.... scarry thought...

15 of them --- this is the first big one we had seen. We have seen a three or four maybe in the 1 to 2 inch range. There are not all that many of them here - sure hope they stick around we have loads of bugs they could chop down on...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We went to Granbury yesterday to visit friends, and on our way there, a sign along I20 said temperature 103, incredible, and to top it off, the air conditioner in our car is out, Wow!
It was a beautiful day in spite of the heat, we sang our hearts out in church, 3 Masses, 5 hours standing on wooden steps, but I was wise and wore my Reebocks.
We were so happy proclaiming the Lord's Resurrection, to all who came to hear and to worship Him. Wish that many people came to church regularly.
Josephine.

Josephine,

I thought of you when we had the cross pass, I could just feel your words of the wonder of that moment... really a wonderful feeling...

Grandbury - we love it over there they have an old drive up movie place there that is just great with a lot of family movies (hard to find these days). There are some great places down town where we have also found some great antiques to resell in Waxahachie (brings in a little extra id you take the time to look).

Enough is enough. Hot, hot, hot. We stopped in Arizona in August of 2002 to change a tire. The temp was 118 degrees and felt it. Today I learned to change out a battery in a pickup in the middle of the pasture (complications from broken thingy that attaches battery to the thingamajiggy) and it felt every bit as hot as I can remember

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It hit 103 at our house today, unbeleivable!

Dallas, TX

Oh boy,How did I missed this thread ... great stuff ... got to catch up.:)

Oh this weather is ridiculous! We had hardly any spring, very little winter and now its like July outside. :( ...and we are praying for rain again.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

The heat again today is going to be 101 at least! The hotest day in April ever per channel 5 news... (I would guess in Dallas?) Poor garden the peas just melted and the greens all looks in bad shape... hope they can pull through. An 87 year man near me told us that after the winter we had expect a really hot summer, a long summer too.... I sure hope he is wrong.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I have seen the opposite too, Mitch. The summer of 1980 set a record for heat, and the next two winters set records for cold including lots of ice and snow that stayed on the ground for days. I'm glad I can't re-live some of the experiences of those years (sons at 4H horse show in June 117 degrees, calves being born in ice and zero-degree weather, building fires in barrels set in the edge of a pond to give cows drinking water, getting excited over "running" water out of water hose on the back porch after ten days of no running water in the house). Hot dog! I have lived long enough I can tell stories about the old days!
Patricia

Dallas, TX

Wow Pat! you so have some stories, cant wait to hear them. Its quite different with me. My Courtyard is Lush and green, everything looks good. My Hosta are unfurling beautifully. My natives are to die for, My Clemitis are blooming, even the Niarobe I just bought about a year ago. My herbs are beautiful. Its so strange, i was so worried about the mass developments in my area, I thought i would have no shade, but they left the best tree for me. In front the building is so tall its shading the sun coming from the east...... God is good! :)

I've often thought, Sylvia, that living in the city might be nice. As a kid I wanted horses and the country, and that is what I have. We do live in town now, but it is a very, very small town.

I can't believe you guys are hotter than us! It was 93 here, I went to the Island and it was 10 degrees cooler!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

103 again yesterday... you should have seen the spring flowers just melt.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

103 here too, although the official temp was 99.
This morning was almost too cool because of the wind as we went for our 2 mile walk.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I want to know how the official temp is always so much lower . . ours is in the shade just like they said to do but we get higher readings almost everyday..

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

It's 68 here and humid. We had 5/8" rain last night! Wow huge difference.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Just getting back to this thread!! Thank goodness it is cooler today, but I SOO want to be home working in the yard instead of sitting in this office. Sure do hope we get the rain we're supposed to, but I'm not too excited about "severe" thunderstorms.

Sylvia_FW - I don't know Posie, but had looked her up once and she lives across the street from my best friend! LOL One of these days I'll go knock on her door.

Sharon

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sharon,
Like I said Posie is coming to the RU so maybe if you make it you can meet her. It's always nice to have a gardener in the area where you live.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Today was such a pleasant day! I opened windows and let the breeze blow through the house all day. I watered the iris and daylily beds as the last few days have really dried them out. There are storms popping up around us, so there's hope for rain. I printed my list of what I have promised for the RU and started checking off what's potted up and ready to go. Time to get it in high gear!

Dallas, TX

Ohhh Pat you are such an inspriration! I know I am going to be a basket case next week! I am a sponser for my friends son Confimation on Monday, tuesday I got to make a list... no I need to do that right now!.... talk to you guys tommorrow from work!

Sylvia

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Pat, that sounds like a wonderful time in the garden. I'll be homebound tomorrow while my car is in the shop (had to be sure it would get me safely to the RU), so I will be spending my time doing the same - going over the list, marking the promised plants, etc.) Not really much chance for rain here, but it's supposed to be cloudy, so maybe it won't be too hot.

Dallas, TX

I guess I will spend Saturday making a good presentation of my stuff. I just love how some of you guys prepare things to give away. ... like some even had their seeds labled in little pacs with pictures on them ... and instructions. some were potted. I am going to start to save my little hosta cups ... Lord know I will have enough, I only ordered 78 this year. lol

Sylvia

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well we had over an inch of rain last night. It was a good soaker. We had a little more today, but didn't make much of a dent in the rain gauge. The clouds were welcome after the scorching days we had early this week.
On another note, I went out to go out to the pond early this morning, and was greeted by a 4 foot heron about as big around as myself. When he flew, his wing span was at least 10 foot. I was running late leaving for work so when my DH got home he put the net back on again. He got a Shubinkin today. We have never had a problem with herons before this year, we think it may be due to the low lake levels, etc. Their normal hunting shallows are gone. Maybe when the spring breeding starts they will find a place to go.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok Sylvia, you keep talking about those hostas, and I don't have a one!! What would be a suggestion for me to get? I have an area with sun only in the morning. I would definately want one that liked water too, because it will be near a dry bed that I am putting in for drainage.

Dallas, TX

omg how awsome! A Heron flying over your place! I would pay to see that.

Shelia I am going make up you and Marylee a little pot. I got some from two plants I finally divided last fall. and I will be dividing more this fall. All Hostas like water! and they would look great around your pond. with your space you can use some big ones. I just got to show you the eight I received this morning!
Francee
Geisha
Laevigata
Leather Sheen
Pineapple Poll
Sagae
Sum & Substance
Whirlwind
I will dmail you the link to the Hosta Librairy. :) I got another 15 coming from New Hampshire or is that Idaho? Anyway .. I am thru for this year. lol

Aww, those are babies that only a gardener can love. May not look so hot now, but oh, baby, they'll be pretty in no time!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

They look very healthy! I got the link, thanks!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I would pay to have a picture of the heron we had visiting our pond one day. Actually I want 2 pictures. One of this huge bird stalking the 4 x 8 pond for the morsel of fish that we had in it. The other needs to be a shot of one of our cats chasing the heron off. Very small but very feisty cat.
Sylvia, you are really going to have a hosta collection! I hope I'm around when you need to divide them.:)
Mary Lee

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I too wish I had stepped back in the house and got the camera before I scared him off. I could have gotten a great pic from the upper deck. But reflexes took over and I clapped and shouted to scare him off.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, your mothering and pond owner instincts took over.lol

Dallas, TX

Marylee I got a Royal Standard for you and Shelia to share and Uundulatas too I think.... Shelia really need that Sum and Substance for her pond ... or that Sagae. They are huge!

Sylvia

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, You are talking a different language!!! LOL!! I guess it is names of hostas? You will have to educate me on those since I have never had one. I will appreciate any of them you have to adopt out. It is only next week that we will be in College Station!!!!

China Spring, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, do you happen to live in Oak Cliff? I went thru a gorgeous cottage there and her garden was so cute. You look like the pictures of the homeowner. This lady was very artistic and had painted the appliances in her kitchen to be cottagey. It was so cute.
hilary

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, I'm right there with Sheila. I have to assume you're talking hosta.:) It would be great to add to my collection. Thanks!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

hag49, it would be funny if you and Sylvia had met before! LOL! It is a small world!

Dallas, TX

Of course its Hostas! LOL now that you have the Hosta Library , you can look them up. ... and dont you guys go buying any Hostas from the Box stores, They are full the HVX Virus!

Hillary, I am a North Dallas Girl, inner city ... Oaklawn to be exact. I wish I did have more dirt around me. But I do have a huge courtyard. :)

Sylvia

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I have to admit that I was tempted to buy something from a cataloque, but then I thought "You fool, you're going to come home from the RU with a nursery in tow! You got no business buyin' anything!" It's going to take me a year atleast to figure out what to do with all these plants. I'm going to save my money and buy pots.LOL
