Euonymus atropurpurea

Lombard, IL(Zone 5b)

I know V.V. posted some pics in the plant database, but I had a question about this shrub/tree. How much shade does it tolerate and how does it color in the fall when planted in a shady spot? I was hoping I could get them to look like this with mostly filtered sun and maybe a tiny bit of direst sun (one hour or so tops). Is that too much to ask for that little of sun, and are there any sources people recommend for this plant?

I know it can take a lot of shade. I don't know how it will color in heavy shade. The one I'm familiar with hardly colors at all, but I do believe there is a lot of variation withing this species.

I haven't found too much on the plant on the internet. I got some good info from Guy's old book. Most sources said that it can take a lot of shade but doesn't mention its effect on color. Vib Val said he was thinking of taking cuttings of his one that colors well, so maybe there is a ton of variability in their fall colors. I just don't know

It's been my experience that shade affects the form of this plant more than the fall color. Our oldest specimen colors pretty well in dense shade (but it's darker than the one in your photo) and it's much more loose and open in habit.

I don't mind the loose or open habit as it would be in the background of other shrubs and would want some height to get over the top of the shrubs. I just wanted to get some color out of it if I was going to use it. Once it gets a little taller it would get some more sun also and maybe get a little denser.
