Sticky Wicket Fixing To Bloom

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I sneak around looking at them when they aren't watching me. I saw Ms. Wicket holding out a little folded bloom. I get such a kick out of seeing such little ones blooming.

OH cool buds Yippee :)) I do the same thing :))

You will love sticky wicket. Once it starts blooming it doesn't stop.

Nanna can you post a picture of your Sticky Wicket alone please for a pre-view of what is coming for us to see with Diane's plant. Plus how old is your plant and how long have you owned it ? What size pot is yours in now ? Thanks, Allison

Can do. Rob's Sticky Wicket

Purchased from Violet Barn 7/13/2005

Received in a 2" pot and transfered to a 4" Azalea pot per instructions on the invoice/packing sheet. The date on the pot was January 2005. I think that is the day the "ear" was potted up to the 2" pot. Because of these dates, I think my plant is about a year to a year and 3 months old.

I followed the suggestions on the Violet Barn sight and pinched the center of the crowns. In the Fall of 2005 I did some major trimming to promote new growth because I wanted a large plant. There is a sticky somewhere with pictures showing the trimming.

The picture below is the result of the new growth after the trimming and an addition potting up in January 2006 to a 6" Azalia pot. You can see that the runner hang almost to the bottom of the pot. I plan to go to a 7 or 8" pan pot as soon as things slow down a little and I can spend more time with my violets.

It blooms continually and it is one of my favorite plants. I love the color of the blooms.

You can see how many buds are getting ready to bloom. I cut spent blooms from the plant about 3 or 4 times a week--whenever I see them. Each time I cut spent blooms I see dosens of new buds forming.

Diane, If you are interested, the thread with everything I have done to SW is dated November 22, 2005 and is titles Would Like Some Suggestions.

Nan,

Thank you for the pic. and information. There is just so much info to remember it makes my head hurt. I don't know if I can bring myself to pinch the center. What if I do to much and kill it. OHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Don't worry. Rob says that SW is one of the most easy trailers to grow. You can just let it do its thing and it will look great.

I didn't mean to stress you out. Just sit back and enjoy your beautiful plant.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

It's Ok Diane you don't have to pinch it you don't want to Rob's Trailers trail good without help also.
Nanna has fancy trailers ! Me I just let the trail and do their thing. My Angel Tears Trail is so big in a 5 inch pan pot. Leaves over the side and high and bushy and out fo theis world love it !
The only time I pinch if the plant is leggy and not bushy or trailing. Or if leaves are old..
I've grown so many Sticky Wickets and mine always bloomed crazy starting as a baby and never stoped !
Fun ! Fun thing about trailers you can grow them anyway you want and as big as you like of keep them small :))

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Nan,

What kind of trailers do you have?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I'm not Nanna but I have grown hundreds of trailers by leaf. Their fun the most fun African violet to grow I think :)) I like that they can have more than one crown giving them many flowers and don't have to have perfect Symentry . All the trailers to me seem to be always blooming once they start and mine have always trailed happly with out any help :))
This one is Aly's Rosy Baby :))

I think this picture was a month or so ago. And wow it's way bigger now in a 5 inch pot. I ake leaves off ever so often to share or grow a new plant.

Oh I'm telling you April and all once you have a trailer baby start blooming I've never had one that stoped :))

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, so on a trailer it doesn't matter so much where you take the leaf from? What about my petrocosmea- as you know, the leaves form that rosette and it looks like someone took a leaf here and there, but where should I take a leaf?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well when I'm giving or using leaves of one of my trailers I take the best ones off. I also take the long leaves off to even the size of the leaves on the trailer.
I have never own a petrocosmea though I saw one a picture in my Gesneriad's journal. I went and checked LL has it and I ordered it. I probaly won't get it until July or so ?
petrocosmea are grown simular as Av's are they not ? one crown ? so I am guessing the leaves would be taken from the way ways as AV's ?
