camera tripod

Pleasantville, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey Dave,
I'm just about to plunk down for a Fuji FinePix 1300. Question came up: do you use a tripod to get flower pictures or can you hold steady enuff without one? And if you use a tripod, is there one that is low enuff to get 12" height flowers? I've been looking and they're all 20-22" smallest height. The 12" is important. I just had a Poppy open which is a total knockout. 12" high.
Many thanks in advance.
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

I don't use a tripod with my 1300, and I very rarely have bad pictures taken. I've taken over 1,000 pictures with this camera, and they have all turned out great. Motion will not affect the photo quality with this camera.

The most important tip: Practice a lot. Your first 50 pictures or so will likely not be very good, but with practice you'll get the hang of it and each picture will be perfect.

Also - pay attention to the "landscape" and "flower" modes. I use the flower mode if I'm taking a shot of anything 3 feet or closer to the camera.

My problem is not with holding the camera still....it is the flowers that keep moving! Seems like we have a steady breeze blowing almost day and night lately! I also found that on closeups I have better results when I turn off the flash so it doesn't go auto and wash out the picture.

Moving flowers in a breeze is definitely a problem. In my own gardens, I just hold the stem with one hand and snap the shot with the other.

If you shoot the picture while you're exhaling you will hold the camera more steadily. Most people "freeze" and don't breathe when taking a picture....your body will actually shake more when doing this, it triggers a subconscious response to stimulate your breathing.

The best source for a camera tripod is your local pawn shop, you can get a really nice one for just a few bucks.

We have a *wonderful* little tripod that's only 5" tall. Go here to see a picture of it in my journal: http://davesgarden.com/gj/gardenwife/viewentry/8128.html. .Can't beat it for $5, that's for sure!

Poojer, you are right. The acronym is bras - breathe, relax, aim, squeeze.

Gardenwife, that's terrific. I think I'll try to get that and for the rest, Carol7, bras.
Thanks again all.
