Thanks Jan- I was lucky to find such a beauty!

Allison I have looked at those pictures and my new and improved, revised wish list includes many of those Russians!

Berry Splash is beautiful (all are, but she's variegated so caught my eye!).
Are those with large areas of light colored foliage such as that one difficult to grow?

(sigh) Episcia Cleopatra.....I once lusted for her then talked to a few people who said she was difficult to grow, (but she was also *very* hard to find and a bit pricey......was yours?) and after having a lot of trouble growing other Episcias....I gave up on her....but I can see why you had to have her!!

Good luck with your new finds!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Nan
I have never grown Episcias and I have been assured by the folks who frequent this forum that they are easy- are you telling me that they have been less than honest? If that's the case somebody has some 'splainin to do! Allison???
Actually Cleopatra was very reasonable, I didn't spend more than 5.50 on any plant. Should I have paid more? LOL
So far I have not found any difference in growing any AV over another. I am always attracted to variegation!

That was a good price for Cleopatra April ! Cleopatra
for lot's of people or the pink plants are harder to grow as they demand a lot of humdity. Most are grown in covered bowls ..of some type. It's humid here and I have never had to cover any.
But Episcias do like it warm and humid. They do not like it cold. Most Vendors will not ship I think if under 55-65 degrees. I don't grow a lot as they grow like weeds and need room I don't have. They do grow well in hanging baskets and can even be grown outside in warm humid areas. So I take the babies and root them and share. Or if I have too many babies I just cut them off and send them to people.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks- one thing I share w/ you is warm and humid! Houston is short for humid!
I think I could grow them in hanging baskets outside in the summer but would have to move them inside in winter, I will have to think about it, otherwise the covered bowl thing sounds good.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

See...there you go....warm and humid~~~you're going to do great with those Episcias!!

My problem is often that I have too many plants competing for the 'prime' locations indoors....summertime, no problem, they can go out on the back deck or under (or hanging in!) the apple trees, but winter is quite another story.

I do run a humidifier and use a lot of lights, but there are often still a few places lacking both humidity and light.

Funny too, that with all the plants I do grow, there are a few that just plain don't like me (episcias seem to be in that group!)! LOL!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Well I have a list of those that don't like me. LOL I guess we all have our achilles heel!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Yep, and I'll bet the ones on my 'blacklist' (LOL) grow great for you, and vice-versa!

Yes, definitely a great price on Cleopatra.....I think they were going for more than $20 when I was looking for it.

I still think she's beautiful even though she and her family hate me, lolol!!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I double checked the price I paid, it was $6.50, still a bargain. Too soon to tell if we will develop a mutually loving and respectful relationship. Time will tell- I will keep you informed.

I think I will call Bluebirds next time I get some money and see if they have Snow Leopard. If so, I guess I'll take a little drive over to get one. Right now I'm waiting to get paid so that I can order some of those green plant trays that are much more durable than the black ones that I have. I want to make individual wick trays with them. Having the trays on a shelf with one big piece of grid is sort of hard for me. I can't get to the back plants very good. So I'm going to make individual wick trays so that I can sort of slide each one out a little to make it easier to get to the ones on the back.

That is great that they have it. I will have to take a trip over to see them soon, although I will probably wait until I return from Michigan. I am going to be flying to Michigan in a week or so. I had a ticket left over from when I did not go to CA one time last year and I have to use it before May 1 or I lose $500, so I'm going to visit my friends in Michigan. I need to get everything set up so that it is easy for DH to take care of my plants while I am gone. I will be gone for about 10 days so I will water everything really well before I go. Hopefully he will not have to water much. I will have to teach him how to do everything in case they start getting too dried out. But after I get back, I definitely have to go get me a Snow Leopard.

WOW your going to Michigan for ten days to visit friends.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, they are more like family than friends. They have been to visit me twice so I'm going to see them this time. I've never been to Michigan so it should be fun. I just have to teach DH what to do to take care of my leaves and plants.

Can he see to take care of them and his self and dog alone ok ? Is he not blind ?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

He is legally blind but he can see well enough with very strong glasses to get around and take care of most things. He can see okay close up, he just can't see anything in detail if it is more than a couple of feet from him. That is why he does great with his computer work, as long as the monitor is right in front of him. He has to sit right up close to the screen in order to see it but at least he can do that.

I'm not sure exactly how to tell him to take care of things other than show him and get him used to taking care of them before I leave. As long as he is used to doing something he does okay.

You know you can also buy magnify screen to go over computor screen to see better. Hubby went to the store to buy me one but they said you can only buy them on line. So we have been looking !
