Hmm interested :) It is definitely a nematanthus since it has all the right characteristics and of course you can have a cutting of it hun!

Thank you ! I was reading how a Nemantanthus is a fibrous-rooted gesneriad a " Kissing cousin" of the African violet. :)) It usually has succulent, shiney foliage growing in opposite pairs on long, long, arching stems. For this reason it makes a fine choice for growing in a hanging basket ! The leaves can range in size from 3/4 " to 4" or more, and their color can vary from almost black to apple green. The flowers are somewhat difficult to describe since some varieties will have short pedicles ( the flower stem) while others will apear to have the flower hanging by a thread (" Thread Flower" has been applied to these in the past ) This difference in flower type was due to the renaming of several varities that once belonged to the Hypocyrta species. The flower colors are in the red-orange-yellow range. The shape of the bloom is pouched, and it varies in size from 1/2 " to 1 1/2 " long. I don;t have this book but would like it. The Miracle Housplants by Virginie and george Elbert ( have one of their books but not this one) has more detail on these plants , more detailed descriptions and individual species and hybrids of this plant too. This book has lots of info about many plants. Does anyone own it ? I'd sure like to get my hands on a copy :))

Oh yes Nematanthus are difficult to bloom . Nematanthus should be fertilized with a high phosphate formula fertilizer . ( the second number the highest 10-30-20) only when in active growth and bloom and not at all when plants are standing still, which is frequently a protracted period. They hate to be over watered, especially during hot weather, as this can quickly lead to rot. Tempertures between 65-85 degrees are preferred. Tempertures above or below will cause Nematanthus to shed its leaves-.
The PH of the soil should be somewhat more acid than that used for African violets. Some say Columnea and Nematanthus grow well when grown in long-fiber sphagnum moss. The Nematanthus along with high phosphate fertilizer need to be a little pot-bound to bloom.

Someone suggested on the identification board that it is nematanthus spotlight..and I tend to think that is the right identification :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Cool did you look it up and see Picture ?

Congrats on the tentative ID. I would suggest putting a question mark by it because there seem to be a fair number of unnamed hybrids floating around (naturally pollinated ones included). Also, I know that some sellers apply their "best guess" names to the plants they sell (I'm not saying that Harmony does that, but just that some do and it could be anywhere in the origins of the plant or its parents). And another thing is that the experts are quite good at distinguishing nematanthus flowers apart, but to me they all look pretty much the same....? And yet another is that I don't think the Nematanthus registry is quite up to date anyway......

It looks huge! please post pics when it blooms.

it is HUGE kyko :) the leaves are the size of my hand :) I just HAD to have it :)
My husband is going to Orlando on the 19th of this month to pickup my father in law at the airport. I am going to have him go by Harmony's and pick me up another one of these and probably some more chimera and such :)

They were pretty honest when they didn't know the names of all the nems they had hanging from the ceiling LOL and did they have a TON..I am sure I am going to be picking up more every time I stop in :) I am just a junkie!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

The leaves still don't look large enough in one of those pictures ..so I am not entirely sure

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry did you see the grower said almost fifty flowers were produced at one time WOW.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

If this is the right plant..I would believe it :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry I've been looking at different ones their so cool. And they bloom two different ways. Some the flowers are shaped like Cygnets. And some hang down like Brugs. So cool look at this one with the deep rose/red center.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I am going to send you cuttings of this one Allison :) SO why would you want me to pick you up another one?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well if you think you can't ship to Donna, I would buy a plant when you go next time. Divide it and send Donnat a plant. Or take cuttings off and send Donna the plant !
