Carpinus henryana new foliage

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Some of you may or may not know that I happen to like hornbeams quite a lot. Some of you may wonder why. If a picture speaks a thousand words, need I say more?

Now, that's a classy leaf.

This fellow Carpinophile agrees with you, Scott. I was very impressed this spring with the buds and emerging leaves on my new C. coreana. SB

Scott, I don't have a single one of the Carpinus. after seeing your wonderful photo I would like to try one or two. Which ones would you suggest for growing in my mixed windbreak area, for this very dry climate, zone 5.

Donna,

Hardiness is an issue with many of them. They all seem drought tolerant. I would think Caprinus coreana would be plenty tough for zone 5 and wind. D-mail me for a small seedling C. henryana if you want to try one. I'll double check the Forest Farm catalog for a zone rating on it. C. japonica has about the prettiest foliage, but I'm not sure if its zone 5 or not. The native C. caroliniana is really cool. Great foliage and bark. I would think it would be tough enough, but I'm not sure.

Carpinus coreana, Carpinus betulus, C x schuschuensis, C. orientalis, Carpinus tschonoskii, Carpinus laxiflora, Carpinus caroliniana, Carpinus cordata--those will work in Zone 5. C. fargesii made it through the winter for me, although I won't guarantee it. C. japonica is apparently hardy for everyone else in Zone 5 but me. I have killed C. polyneura, C. henryana(Scott gave me another to try), and C. turczaninovii.

Just to add to Kevin's note. The photos I've seen of Carpinus laxiflora have been very beautiful. I took some pictures at Spring Grove on Friday. Still too early for foliage, but to give you an idea...

And of the flowers. However, photos of flowers I've seen show a shrimp pink to them that is absent here. I don't know if that color has come and gone, is still arriving, or varies from tree to tree.
