How big a container is needed for crepe myrtle?

How big a container is needed for growing crepe myrtle? Not the one that grows to 30', but the smaller ones---12'-20'. I've got some 24" containers that hold 2.44 cubic feet. They are pretty much cylindrical and stay the same width from top to bottom. Are they big enough? What other trees might grow well in them. My intent for the container trees is to have flowering "somethings" over the septic field where I can't really have big roots tearing up the field. Thanks in advance for your thoughts --- Ed

You can't go wrong with crepe myrtles for "flowering somethings" as they bloom 100 days a year. I had several 30 feet ones blow over in Hurricane Katrina and the roots did not spread any wider than 2 feet, so you are probably safe with what you want to do. (But, I know someone on this forum who is going to disagree with me.)
I have uprighted a few of them and they seem to have survived. Crepe myrtles are very hardy and resilient.

Thanks liveoaklady - Good info. May the canes stay away from you this year. Ed
