I have grown both Star of Yelta and Grandpa Ott. They look indentical to me. Are they the same plant?

They look similar but is not the same. Here you have them both, for instans look at the width on the black strikes and the width on the pink troat.

Great explanation, Janett! I notice that Grandpa Ott strikes have a spoke twist to them that Star of Yelta doesn't.

Okay,I'm going to post a link to a thread where I addressed this question to some degree and please remember that everyone shares from their own experience...so I will share from my experience with the types in question...

Janett, your pictures look great, but my perspective is that the example to the right is closer to a "Grandpa Ott's" and the example on the left is closer to the "Star of Yelta"...based on the colors as they were initially described when first offered and when I first grew them... ...

Link to thread where I shared on my experience regarding the various blue I.purpureas and various marketing names...

Janett - The amount of confusion regarding these types of Ipomoea purpurea coupled with the common degree of overlapping features has resulted in pictures posted to the PlantFiles database that I perceive as mislabeled...

I've tried to share from my experience with growing these types and what I perceive as the correct features to look for...

Granps Ott's should have a fuchia colored star and alot of fuchia in the throat area as shown in the example I cited in the thread...the degree of overlapping features with other types of Ipomoea purpurea are soo common, that unless the Granpa Ott's is selected for a distinct fuchia star and alot of fuchia in the throat...then the distinction from other types will be more the product of a 'sales pitch' and/or otherwise 'imaginary'...

Good Luck and...

Ron

P.S. - The very first Granpa Ott's seeds that I grew (in the early 80's) from the Seed Savers Organization had a distinct fuchia star and alot of fuchia in the throat...the seeds they offer now rarely display the original rich fuchia 'typiness' and are indistinguishable from the plethora of overlapping features of many very common blueish-purple I.purpureas...

Ron , that is soo sad. is there no way to get a hold of or get back the real Grandpa Ottīs I would love to see it. Please Ron say you have a picture somewhere on the real deal.

Janett - The original type Granpa Ott's is still around, but I'm advocating that people interested in it look for the combination of the fuchsia star and alot of fuchsia in and around the throat area as shown in the photos I linked to in the thread...

A darker Grandpa Ott's next to a lighter blue 'purp'
notice amount of fuchsia around the throat and color of the star

very 'typey' for granpa Ott's alot of fuchsia around the throat area with a dark fuchia star on a purple limb
