Get your flowers tipsy?

Denver, CO

Interesting article in todays newspaper. Apparently, if you get your daffs drunk, they stand up better and don't fall over! (Unlike most of us!)

William Miller of Cornell University Flower and Bulb Research Program experimented and reported in April issue of HortTechnology, results of his experiments. He tried gin, vodka, whisky, rum, tequila, schnapps, wines and beer. Beer and wine don't work, and solutions greater than 10% alcohol are toxic. (Duh!) But solutions of whisky, gin, vodka and tequila between 4 and 6% alcohol effectively stunted the growth of paperwhites stems by 30 to 50% with no effect on the blooms which remained as large, fragrant and long lasting as normal.

They had to conduct an experiment to figure out that booze stunts your growth?

If this is something you want to try, wait until the shoots are several inches long, the pour the diluted alcohol into the soil. To get a 5% solution from 80 proof liquor, which is 40% alcohol, you add 1 part liquor to 7 parts water.

He didn't say what to do with the rest of the bottle.

Wonder if this could be used to graphically prove that drinking will make you grow up short and scrawney ?
